It has several common names: the spiny spider, spiny orb-weaver, and spiny-backed orb-weaver (Gasteracantha sp.). It's up to you to call one of the names above, and I think it doesn't mind that. The name refers to its physique, which has a six-spiked back.
And it's true as the proverb stands, "Don't judge something by appearance." Even though it looks scary, this spider is so cool because it is quite friendly towards an amateur photographer like me. Not like the jumping spider, which is known to be very aggressive and very troublesome. I found it this afternoon while on an afternoon walk.
