I don't normally post Lichens in black and white. I do like their pale green or grey colour contrasting with brown, rotten wood they usually grow on.
But (there is always a but) I put some music on and started to play with some photos and was curious how would they turn out after I strip them from all the pretty green and grey...
Not too shabby :)
There was a whole army of them growing on an old pine stump. Dozens and dozens of tiny little soldiers. They are jut few millimetres across and less that 1 cm in height. The biggest cup I even found not on this stump) as maybe 5mm across and it was a giant!
The big stick in in the front of the photo are pine needles, so you can imagine how small they are.
What you see here is Cladonia Lichen also called Cup Lichen which doesn't surprise me at all. It is quite a distinctive shape and cannot be confused with anything else when you see it.
