Small and insignificant

I have always wondered how does it feels like when the ground you stand on is shaking. One of those things I did not really want to feel but was just curious about the feeling.
Well, now I know.

This morning, around 60 km off the coast of Portugal, the earth moved. It was a 5.4 earthquake (according to some sources) that shook a large part of Portugal. It was also the biggest one in 10 years.

You can read more about it here if you want.

There are no major damages, and it wasn't strong enough to make things fall off the shelves like in the movies (or from reports from other unfortunate places). But it was a bit of a surprise to wake up at 5am to a shaky room. And I admit - I did get scared.

All that makes you realize, at least for a while, how little and helpless humans are.

Back to Lisbon on photos though, as this place was almost completely destroyed in the biggest earthquakes a few centuries ago.

Lisbon earthquake of 1755, series of earthquakes that occurred on the morning of Nov. 1, 1755, causing serious damage to the port city of Lisbon, Portugal, and killing an estimated 60,000 people in Lisbon alone.

Now the city is so pretty and so versatile. A lovely Art Deco building on the first photo, which currently is a hotel with some shops on the ground floor.
I have passed it many times, and every time I admire it equally.

On the photo above there was an interesting display of items fished from the ocean with the time of their decomposition. Tires, toilet seats, washing machine engines...
For some reason, the guard there did not allow me to take photos. But it was a cool thing to see nonetheless.

And back to the old part that I never tired of. So many streets, all similar, but also so different. With large statues, decorated walls, and a whole lot of tourists :p

I believe this one is part of the arch when you enter the city from the river side.

This olive tree was growing in the middle of the stairs between the buildings. Very old and crooked. How did it survive there?

So many people everywhere...

Amazing olive tree.. That's a high magnitude earthquake. I'm glad you're safe and nothing ruined. 🩷

Amazing olive tree..

It did impress me too. And I was surprised to see it there.

Yes, we are all fine :) Thank you!

How are you dear friend @ewkaw good day
certainly, situations like this make us see how vulnerable we really are. I am very sorry that you had to go through this experience
How beautiful the architecture and details of the monuments look in black and white
Beautiful photographs

Thank you! Nothing bad happened thankfully. Just a bit of a scare.

Time for reflection. I'm glad the earthquake didn't do any damage.

The music to read and look long and deep into these photos was perfect. 👌

Oh yes, me too. And hopes its the last one in my lifetime :p

Yay! Glad you enjoyed it.

No, there is no need to repeat certain experiences. 🙏

Drunk bed XD

That olive tree may have survived the earthquake from 1755. Good that this one was not too strong and no damage or other loss was caused!

Haha no more booze before sleep! :D

It is quite possible actually. It looks really old!

There are a lot of curious things that go on, but many are only interesting if you don't have a front row seat to them.

It is not the norm here either at this time. Once within the last 15 years, I was sitting at my desk at work one day and we experienced a tremor from a small quake a little distance away. It was not so much shaking really and was barely felt consciously, but still something in my body detected the difference and for a few seconds, I felt a little queasy. I was surprised it made my physically react that way.

I'm glad it wasn't worse there.

Yep...

Yea I am glad too. My first thought was about the flat above us, if it is gonna fall on us and when :p

That reminds me, one time years back when I was moving out of state and talking to a woman about an apartment that I would rent sight unseen, There were apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floor and while I was hesitating about which one I should choose, she mentioned that one good thing about the top floor was.... that no one's toilet could ever run over into your apartment ! 🤣 I decided I would go with that one. LOL

Haha it is a very good point :D :D

Lovely photos in black and white.
That’s quite an earthquake! I am afraid that more earthquakes are appearing around the world from this year onwards.

We even had two earthquakes in areas where there were no fault line! Something is happening to the electro magnetic flows on earth and the conjunctions among planets this October indicate more earthquakes.

They do happen here all the time. But so small we dont feel them at all. This was pretty big and those do not happen that often.

I do hope big earthquakes would be fewer in the future. It’s okay to small earthquakes to release some pressure. I am afraid of storm surge if the earthquakes did occur in our neighbouring countries in the future. Some said there’s a possibility.

Well, now I know.

It made me remember a lot of things, in my city it doesn't usually shake too much but in general almost everywhere in Mexico we can feel tremors occasionally, I am very surprised that you were able to feel the earthquake because there are people who literally don't feel them and believe me they are happier like this.

I love your pictures and they made me really want to get out around the city, there are a couple of new buildings that might look good in the pictures, I'll see if I can go downtown in the next few days.

Oh I am sure they are happier and less stressed :p
I really did not expect it.

Yay! Glad they motivated you to take more photos :)

Oof, I'm glad it wasn't worse. Earth tremors are weird: I have slept through large ones (over 6 on the scale) and woken up with others. We get them quite a lot, because of mining that happened here

Yea I am glad too. I know this area can get them (and smaller ones occur all the time), but one still hopes its not gonna happen.
