There is a certain perception of "central focus" in photographs cropped in square format and if you add to that the eloquence of black and white, where colour distraction is non-existent, then you have deliciously complex visual layouts filled with a lot of elements most of the time. Obviously, I am referring to what happens using this format for street photography.

Hay cierta percepción de "foco central" en las fotografías recortadas en formato cuadrado y si a eso le agregas la elocuencia del blanco y negro, en donde la distracción de los colores mo existe, entonces tenemos planos visuales deliciosamente complejos y repletos de elementos la mayoría de las veces. Obviamente, me refiero a lo que sucede usando este formato para fotografía callejera.

This format brings together the goodness of the 4x6 vertical (especially for mobile and tablet viewing) with the 4x6 horizontal which is good for images present wide angle on short focus length views of street scenes, and is even quite efficient for showing single street elements such as windows, doors or even an eventual close-up portrait.

Este formato reúne las bondades del 4x6 vertical (especialmente para ver en móviles y tabletas) con el 4x6 horizontal el cual es bueno para las imágenes que presentan vistas amplias y con focales cortas de las escenas callejeras e incluso es bastante eficientes para mostrar elementos callejeros puntuales como ventanas, puertas o incluso un eventual retrato a corta distancia.

For me, cropping my photos in 1x1 format takes me back to my childhood days, when my father used to take pictures of us when he took us on outings. Dad used a small Kodak 35mm film and when he took the rolls of film to be processed, he always brought a lot of photos in square format. In those years (70's and 80's of the last century) these were small colour photos, but I still have that in my memory when I do this kind of editions even in B&W.

Para mi recortar mis fotos en formato 1x1 me remonta a tiempos de mi niñez, cuando mi padre nos hacía fotos cuando nos llevaba de paseo. Papá usaba una pequeña Kodak 35mm de película y cuando llevaba los rollos a revelar, siempre traía un montón de fotos en formato cuadrado. En aquellos años (70 y 80 del siglo pasado) eran pequeñas fotos en colores, pero yo sigo teniendo eso en mi memoria cuando hago este tipo de ediciones incluso en blanco y negro.

Another memory I have of doing this type of photographic work based on the 1x1 format are the slides. My parents had wealthy friends whose main occupation was to travel all over the world all year round. But when they were here in Venezuela, we would go to visit them at their property in the countryside and there, apart from having a great time, I had the opportunity to see the photos of the trips made by my parents' friends, and I did this using a slide projector which they let me manipulate at my pleasure... I'm talking about the 70's, for me that was technology of the big size! :)

Otro recuerdo que tengo al hacer este tipo de trabajo fotográfico basado en formato 1x1 son las diapositivas. Mis padres tenían amigos pudientes cuya principal ocupación era viajar a todas partes del mundo durante todo el año. Pero cuando ellos estaban aquí en Venezuela, nosotros íbamos a visitarles a su propiedad en el campo y allí, aparte de pasar ratos excelentes, yo tenía la oportunidad de ver las fotos de los viajes hechos por los amigos de mis padres, y esto lo hacía valiéndome de un proyector de diapositas el cual me dejaban manipular a placer... ¡Estoy hablando de los años 70, aquello para mi era tecnología del gran talla! :)

Now, almost half a decade later, I'm here reminiscing about square photos and editing mine like this with the intention of perceiving them in a more intimate way and sharing them with you here in today's #monomad challenge, as I usually do with most of my black and white photographic content here at #Hive... ;)

Ahora, casi media década después, estoy aquí rememorando fotos cuadradas y editando las mías así con la intención de percibirlas de una manera más intima y compartirlas con ustedes aquí en el reto #monomad de hoy, tal como suelo hacer con la mayoría de mi contenido fotográfico en blanco y negro aquí en #Hive...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
