The beautiful and colorful Monumental Waterfall of Santa Maria di Leuca - Puglia Italy
On August 9, I arrived in Santa Maria di Leuca (Puglia - Italy) to spend 10 days of vacation together with my family.
Santa Maria di Leuca is a beautiful Italian tourist resort and it is also a fixed and recurring part of my summer vacation because every year I try to spend at least one week in August in this enchanting place.
On the evening of August 12, together with my wife, my daughter, my niece, and my niece's best friend, I visited one of the most charming and evocative places in Santa Maria di Leuca: the promontory of Punta Meliso.
The charm and beauty of the promontory of Punta Meliso are due to the presence of historical and tourist points of interest in a small space and therefore easily visited on foot.
In fact, on the promontory of Punta Meliso there are:
- a Basilica
- a Lighthouse
- a Marian Column from 1694
- a Monumental Cross
- a Monumental Waterfall
- a breathtaking view

The Marian Column and Lighthouse are located a short walk from the Basilica of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae.
have taken many photos of the lighthouse and the Basilica but in this post I want to show the beauty of the monumental waterfall whose summit is just a few steps away from the Basilica.
On summer nights the monumental waterfall is illuminated by many plays of light and from the top you can admire the whole waterfall but also the port of Santa Maria di Leuca and the whole small town of Santa Maria di Leuca.
Adding to the beauty of the view I admired on the evening of August 12 was also the moon and its reflection in the sea.
The monumental waterfall is an imposing structure resulting from hydraulic engineering, was inaugurated in October 1939 and is the terminal point of the 'Pugliese Aqueduct.
The waterfall has a drop of about 120 meters but unfortunately it is not always active and on the evening of my visit it was not active.
I will stay in Santa Maria di Leuca for another 6 days and as early as tomorrow I will inform myself about the opening dates of the waterfall because I would love to see it active
The waterfall can be freely visited and at its borders there are stairs consisting of about 250 steps.
At the base of the waterfall there is a large Roman column built in honor of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus.
I conclude this post with a selection of the photos I took during my visit to the monumental waterfall.
I'm having a good time in Santa Maria di Leuca thanks to the beautiful sea, the charm and beauty of the place I'm in but most of all thanks to the time I'm spending in complete relaxation with my family because devoting time to my nearest and dearest is always the best way to spend my time.
Unfortunately, vacations always last too short but I still have 6 more vacation days at my disposal and in my next posts I will share other beautiful moments spent in Santa Maria di Leuca.

La bella e colorata cascata monumentale di Santa Maria di Leuca - Puglia Italia
Il 9 agosto sono arrivato a Santa Maria di Leuca per trascorrere 10 giorni di vancanza insieme alla mia famiglia.
Santa Maria di Leuca è una bellissima località turistica italiana ed è anche una tappa fissa e ricorrente delle mie vacanze estive perchè ogni anno cerco di trascorrere almeno almeno una settimana nel mese di agosto in questo incantevole luogo.
La sera del 12 agosto, insieme a mia moglie, mia figlia, mia nipote e la simpatica amica di mia nipote, ho visitato uno dei posti più affascinanti e suggestivi di Santa Maria di Leuca: il promontorio di Punta Meliso.
Il fascino e la bellezza del promontorio di Punta Meliso sono dovuti alla presenza di punti di interesse storico e turistico in un ridotto spazio e quindi facilmente visitabili a piedi.
Infatti sul promontorio di Punta Meliso ci sono:
- una Basilica
- un Faro
- una Colonna Mariana del 1694
- una Croce Monumentale
- una Cascata Monumentale
- un panorama mozzafiato
Nella foto seguente puoi vedere la colonna Mariana e il Faro.
La colonna mariana e il faro si trovano a pochi passi dalla Basilica di Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae.
Ho scattato molte foto al faro e alla Basilicata ma in questo post voglio mostrare la bellezza della cascata monumentale la cui sommità si trova a pochi passi dalla Basilica.
Le notti di estate la cascata monumentale è illuminata da tanti giochi di luce e dalla sommità è possibile ammirare tutta la cascata ma anche il porto di Santa Maria di Leuca e tutta la piccola cittadina di Santa Maria di Leuca.
A completare la bellezza del panorama che ho ammirato la sera del 12 agosto c'era anche la luna e il suo riflesso nel mare.
La cascata monumentale è un imponente struttura frutto dell'ingegneria idraulica, è stata inaugurate nell'ottobre del 1939 ed è il punto terminale dell 'Acquedotto Pugliese.
La cascata si sviluppa su un dislivello di circa 120 metri ma purtroppo non è sempre attiva e la sera della mia visita non era attiva.
La cascata è liberamente visitabile e ai suoi bordi ci sono delle scale composte da circa 250 gradini.
Ai piedi della cascata c'è una grande colonna romana costruita in onore dell'imperatore romano Ottaviano Augusto.
Concludo questo post con una selezione delle foto che ho scattato durante la mia visita alla cascata monumentale.
Sto trascorrendo dei bei momenti a Santa Maria di Leuca grazie al bel mare, al fascino e alla bellezza del luogo in cui mi trovo ma soprattutto grazie al tempo che sto trascorrendo in completo relax con la mia famiglia perchè dedicare del tempo ai miei affetti più cari è sempre il miglior modo di impiegare il mio tempo.
Purtroppo le vacanze durano sempre troppo poco ma ho ancora 6 giorni di vacanza a mia disposizione e nei miei prossimi post condividerò altri momenti belli trascorsi a Santa Maria di Leuca.
