Dear Hive friends, this year I have decided to create a small vegetable garden for my family to have some healthy fresh vegetables, and if I manage to produce enough tomatoes, some good tomato sauce too. All of this will be done at my parents' home, surrounded by countryside where there is plenty of space for growing plants since I live in a small apartment in town.
The main problems to face this year are primarily two: the drought problem and the limited available water, and the time required to maintain a garden, which requires many maintenance operations throughout its life.
I have found, or rather I have started an experiment, thinking of cultivating everything in pots, keeping many plants on a raised base close to the water source, a barrel that collects rainwater from the roof.
Cari amici di Hive, quest'anno ho deciso di creare un piccolo orticello per la famiglia, per avere un po' di sana verdura fresca e se riuscirò a produrre abbastanza pomodori anche un po' di buona conserva di pomodoro. Tutto questo a casa dei miei genitori, immerso nelle campagne, dove c'è spazio abbondante per poter coltivare le piante, perchè io abito in un piccolo appartamento in paese.
I problemi principali da affrontare quest'anno sono principalmente due, il problema siccità e la poca acqua disponibile e i tempi per seguire un orto, che richiede molte opere di manutenzione durante tutto l'arco della sua vita.
Ho trovato, o meglio ho iniziato una sperimentazione, pensando di coltivare tutto in vaso, mantenendo molte piante su una base rialzata e vicine alla fonte d'acqua, una botte che raccoglie l'acqua piovana dal tetto.
Why in pots?
Certainly, the pot will grow smaller and less productive plants, but it has many advantages over the drought problem. Much less water is needed to water a plant in a pot, while a plant in the ground requires many more liters because it spreads in all directions and drains deeply. By placing the plants close to the house, where they can only take direct light from the southeast, I avoid the hottest hours of summer afternoons, which dry up every drop of water, and the plants are protected from the strong storms that always come from the northwest, fueled by the cold waters of Lake Garda.
Perchè in vaso?
Sicuramente il vaso farà crescere piante più piccole e meno produttive, ma ha molti vantaggi rispetto al problema siccità. Occorre molta meno acqua per abbeverare una pianta in vaso, mentre una pianta in pieno terreno richiede molti più litri, perchè si disperde in tutte le direzioni e drena in profondità. Posizionando le piante a ridosso della casa, che possano prendere solo la luce diretta proveniente da Sud-Est, evito le ore più calde del pomeriggio estivo, che asciugano ogni goccia d'acqua e le piante sono riparate delle forti tempeste che provengono sempre da Nord-Ovest, alimentate dalle fredde acque del Lago di Garda.
Why raised?
I avoid the presence of many pests and harmful animals, such as soil insects, moles, and mice. They will always be exposed to flying insects, but they can be more easily contained by seeing them, while it is always more complicated against those who attack our garden hidden underground. Along the entire perimeter of the raised beds, I have placed the tomato plants, which instead of growing upwards and having to build many supports, I thought of letting them hang down along the sides, possibly adding some small support for the weight of the tomatoes, but it will certainly require much less work and time.
Perchè rialzato?
Evito la presenza di molti parassiti e animali nocivi, come insetti del terreno, talpe, topi. Saranno sempre esposte agli insetti volanti, ma si possono contenere più facilmente potendoli vedere, mentre è sempre più complicato contro chi attacca il nostro orto nascosto nel sottosuolo. Lungo tutto il perimetro dei bancali rialzati, ho posto le piante di pomodoro, che invece di far crescere verso l'alto e dover costruire molti sostegni, ho pensato di far scendere lungo i lati, aggiungendo eventualmente poi qualche piccolo sostegno per il peso dei pomodori, ma sicuramente richiederà molto meno lavoro e tempo.
The arrangement of vegetables.
I have opted for this arrangement. As I said before, I have placed all the tomatoes along the raised perimeter so that they can hang down along the sides. Inside, I have placed all the vertically growing plants that do not require support or large spaces, such as eggplants, black cabbage, and chili peppers.
The zucchini, on the other hand, which have very large leaves and occupy different spaces, will be kept on the ground, and then I will expand them as they require more space. Near the zucchini, you can also see all the bulb plants, such as white onions, Tropea onions, and garlic. Since they need space in the ground to develop, I have used large 40-liter fabric pots, which are perfect for allowing the bulbs to expand and breathe.
Honestly, I don't know what to expect, it's an experiment I'm trying to get a low-cost garden in as little time as possible, while trying to keep everything within reach. Sorry for the mess you see behind the garden, but since they're doing some construction work at my parents' house, we had to move a large part of the outdoor garage under the house roof and there's a bit of clutter. We hope this idea can work, in a few weeks I'll do another report on the situation, so we can see together if I'm on the right track.
La disposizione degli ortaggi.
Ho optato per questa disposizione. Come ho detto prima, ho posizionato tutti i pomodori lungo il perimetro rialzato, così da farli scendere lungo i lati, all'interno ho posto invece tutte le piante a crescita verticale, che non necessitano di sostegno o grandi spazi, come le melanzane, il cavolo nero e i peperoncini.
Le zucchine invece, che hanno foglie molto ampie e occupano diverso spazio, le terrò a terra, per poi ampliarle mano a mano che richiederanno più spazio. Vicino alle zucchine vedete anche tutte le piante da bulbo, come le cipolle bianche, le cipolle di tropea e l'aglio. Avendo bisogno di spazio nel terreno per svilupparli, ho utilizzato dei grossi vasi in tessuto da 40 litri, che sono perfetti per permettere ai bulbi di espandersi e respirare.
Sinceramente non so cosa aspettarmi, è un esperimento che sto tentando, riuscire ad ottenere un orto low cost in quanto tempo sopratutto, cercando di tenere tutto a portata di mano. Scusate il disordine che vedete dietro l'orto, ma siccome stanno facendo dei lavori edili a casa dei miei genitori, abbiamo dovuto spostare buona parte del garage esterno sotto la tettoia di casa e c'è un po' di disordine. Speriamo che questa idea possa funzionare, tra qualche settimana farò un nuovo reportage della situazione, così possiamo vedere insieme se sono sulla strada giusta.
I also take this opportunity to share photos of some plants from my orchard, which are blooming beautifully this year, especially the cherries, but I hope some rain comes from the sky, otherwise they won't have enough strength to form so many fruits. Always hoping that the rains come moderately and not too forcefully.
Even my latest personal creations, where I grafted wild cherry plants with my Kordia Durone varieties, have bloomed more abundantly this year and are growing healthy and strong. Even the two plum trees that I buried 5 years ago have grown a lot, but have never produced any fruits until now, while this year they are rich in small plums ready to ripen, fingers crossed...
Colgo l'occasione anche per condividere le foto di alcune piante del mio frutteto, che quest'anno stanno fiorendo splendidamente, sopratutto le ciliegie, ma spero arrivi un po' di acqua da cielo, altrimenti non avranno abbastanza forza da formare tanti frutti. Sperando sempre che le piogge arrivino con moderazione e non troppo impetuose.
Anche le mie ultime creazioni personali, dove ho innestato piante selvatiche di ciliegio con le mie varietà di Durone Kordia, quest'anno sono fiorite più abbondantemente e stanno crescendo sane e forti. Persino le due piante di susine che ho interrato 5 anni fa, sono cresciute molto, ma non hanno mai prodotto frutti fino ad oggi, mentre quest'anno sono ricche di piccole susine pronte a maturare, incrociamo le dita...
