I love that I can feed my chickens (most) food scraps! Did you know chickens actually live to eat meat? Any leftovers you won’t be eating? Plates of food your kids didn’t eat? Toss to the chickens! They will recycle it into nutrient dense eggs!
Lucky for me, my neighbor had one of my favorite fruits. Cantaloupe! After enjoying a hearty afternoon snack of it I dropped the rest off over at the chickens for them to enjoy.
As the sun fell the girls returned back into their chicken coop and I paid a little visit to one of my broody hens. While none of them have produced new chicks yet, I’m hoping that I’ll get at least one this year.
Her and a few other hens have been broody for a while now but I’ll I’ve got so far are eggs that have exploded. I have to say it’s one of the foulest smells I’ve ever smelled in my life!
If you’re wondering what causes an egg to explode like this it’s from the gasses that build up and create pressure in the egg which can cause ooze or simply just explode. Combine that with the hot weather and you get one really foul smell!
Here’s to hoping my girls will have a healthy chick soon. I can't wait to share that experience with you!
