The home of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, it was originally called the Olympic Saddledome when it was completed in 1983. It was built as part of the development that came when Calgary was awarded the right to host the 1988 Winter Olympic Games and has hosted hockey, lacrosse, basketball, and many other events over the years. It is among the oldest arenas in the NHL, and in the next few years it is slated to be replaced by a newer, more modern event center. The Saddledome has a roof shaped like a saddle, which is part of the western theme of Calgary, which also hosts the annual Exhibition and Stampede, which draws visitors from around the world.
