I am looking at my hair in the mirror and hating every bit of it. The colour was very ugly, not fine and to make matters worse the hair was very short. One would expect that a hair as old as 3 years should be very long but that wasn't the case with mine. I would go to the salon to have my hair done and the hairdresser would say to me "this hair is not fine o, cut it off, it is too short". I hated to hear things like that.
One day I went to make my hair as usual and when I got to the salon I was so frustrated with the way my hair was that I told the hairdresser to please help me cut it. I wanted to chop it all off, but luckily for me this hairdresser knew how to transition from relaxed hair to the natural virgin hair. I have always had my doubts about keeping natural hair as a black woman because our hair type is usually very thick, strong and stubborn. The type popularly referred to as the 4a, 4b and 4c hair types. I didn't know anything about hair care. I know i have come across some sites online that talked about different hair types, their texture, porosity and hair care, this thought scared me but, the hairdresser assured me that I had nothing to worry about. So, I had my hair chopped off leaving only the natural part just growing newly.
April 2019 marked the beginning of my natural hair journey. I was inexperienced in caring for virgin hair but I was determined to make it work. I would always say to myself, "my hair can be long too". So I started by reading intensively about the different hair types and their porosity types too. From there I found out that my hair was the 4b hair type, not too curly, shrinkage level not up to a 100% and softer than the regular 4c hair type. I got natural hair products like the avocado oil, shearbutter, shampoo and conditioner for natural hair types and I got started. I knew I needed more products but those were the ones i could afford at the time.
Slowly, but with so much conviction I started to tend to my hair. In a space of 6 months I saw massive growth and improvement. I saw my hair growth and I was intrigged. Fast forward to 2020, my hair had experienced some massive increase and i was happy. Then, I had my first big trim, I mean I wanted an even hair length. I continued to care for my hair, feeding it with all the nutrients it needed to stay healthy. Sometimes I would make some hair food at home using carrots, avocado, and banana. I was very intentional about my hair growth. By the end of 2021 my hair length had increased so much that I would always flaunt my hair with so much pride.
I am happy with everything about the hair. The colour is now darker, my hair is now fuller, my edges are now growing, everything just feels right.
