Article name: Does Supplementation of Diet With 'Fish Oil' Reduce Blood Pressure?
This article was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 1993. It is a meta-analysis of 17 controlled clinical trials of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFA) supplementation.
The article shows that hypertensive patients who take ω-3 PUFA at doses greater than 3g a day change the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by —5.5 (—8.1 to —2.9) and —3.5 (—5.0 to —2.1) mmHg respectively
The SBP and DBP reductions are significant and show that there may be a place for supplementation with ω-3 PUFA (fish oils) in some hypertensive patients.
