Algeria opposes an armed solution to the problem created by the coup in Niger. It has started a process of mediation for which it is going to talk to ECOWAS countries Nigeria, Ghana and Benin, which have favored a military intervention.
For this purpose, Algeria has sent its foreign minister, Ahmed Attaf, on a mediation trip to Nigeria, Benin and Ghana, trying to end the crisis with the Republic of Niger. Algerian president Tebboune said on August 6, 2023 that he “categorically rejects any external military intervention” in the Republic of Niger. A military intervention would be “a direct threat to Algeria”.
