Then I took my car and I went to the center of Lisbon to get to Sintra, this city is relatively close to the center of Lisbon you will only drive a few kilometers, if you do not have a car then there is no problem you have many forms of transport available to get there To the "palace da pena" you can take from metro, uber, tuk tuk, buses! you have to come prepared because you are going to climb a hill it requires a bit of resistance to get to the palace! the entrance has a cost of 14 euros per adult, all the tourist sites in lisbon are relatively expensive due to the great demand of tourists in high seasons!๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ˜œ

After queuing to enter, which in summer you probably wait 15 to 20 minutes, we move on to the first section of our adventure, the path that takes us to different areas of the palace, we can do some trails since the palace was built in the highest from the mountain range of sintra, we can visit some gardens before going to our main tourist attraction! what i like about "palacio da pena" is that it is not only a giant and colorful structure but the landscape that surrounds it gives it that mysterious and natural look, sintra is known for being a very humid area!๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒป

First of all, when we see the architecture of the castle, we immediately understand that it is not very old, we cannot compare it with a 5th century castle, but the fact that it is not old does not mean that it does not tell a fantastic story! This palace was one of the most important residences of the Portuguese royalty, its representation is the XIX however before being built a small chapel was used that existed in the area called (Nossa Senhora da Pena) it is believed that it was built in the century 14, the palace became part of UNESCO in 1995.๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

When the 1755 earthquake hit Portugal many structures collapsed and the monastery was no exception! later an interesting event occurs and it is that in 1834 the catholic church loses the supreme power, the sanctuary and its grounds passed from the hands of the monks to the monarchy! only 2 years passed and in 1836 the queen "Maria II" of our country married "Fernando II" who acquired the Portuguese "nationality" by Maria II arriving in our country began to acquire properties and among them many lands of the Sintra area! it was not something that just happened practically the king was captivated by sintra in some of his expeditions with his wife.๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

King Ferdinand II would use his personal wealth to create in these beautiful landscapes a house that would be a summer tourist destination! but his ambition would not stay here!!! He continued to invest money in the property, and the small house that was a restoration gradually becomes a large colorful palace with romantic architecture, this great feat would only be possible through the supervision of the respected Wilhelm, a mining engineer and geologist who At that time I was temporarily living in Portugal!๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

And what one day was a restored house had become the most emblematic palace of royalty in the 19th century, who understands architectural styles perceives that the palace has a combination of different styles: from neo-Gothic to pseudo-Manuelita, it was and still is It continues to be a luxurious and exotic rest area, having built it on top of the Sintra mountain range gives it 360-degree views of beautiful landscapes, to decorate the luxurious palace many luxurious artistic pieces were moved to the facilities, in addition famous people were hired painters to create works of art in oil!๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It is a pity to visit it in winter because we had a cloudy day and generally the photos are not very good in such an environment, when we arrived at the site it was raining, but we were lucky that the rain stopped! That's why to all those who want to come here I recommend that it be in summer, the weather is not bad because since you are in a mountain range it is always a little cool! Fernando II's ambition continued and later to connect the palace with nature he created an "English park" that today is an icon of our architecture!๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”

In times of the monarchy, marriages were "business" so there was hardly a deep love in relationships, the man generally had lovers like the queen, but everything was very discreet after the death of Maria II in 1853 the king contracted marriage to a beautiful opera singer named (Hensler) who would later immortalize his presence by building a villa in the palace gardens and obviously we can visit him!๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

My wife always says "the monarchy did not come to stay" and of course it was a somewhat strange "policy" that in Portugal was not going to be forgiven by the people and in 1905 there was a "coup d'รฉtat" against the kings, unfortunately King Carlos I was assassinated by the people together with his son Carlos II, his wife and his other son Filipe managed to flee the country! WHO WOULD SAY? THIS WOULD BE THE LAST ROYAL FAMILY TO INHABIT THE PALACE๐Ÿ’‚โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’‚โ€โ™€๏ธ
Sintra is a great place. I remember having visited it like 15 years ago, together with three very colourful and amazing palaces. On the funny side, I also remember a super-heavy rain, so that I came back to the car completely wet... Not a single square-centimetre of my body was left untouched...

Wow then you know Portugal! From what country are yo my friend?

I visited Portugal during 2.5 weeks 10-15 years ago, and I remember a few highlights from this visit.

I am currently living close to Paris in France. However, I have moved quite a lot during my career, changing thus location many times. When I visited Portugal, I think that I was based in Strasbourg (France) or in Freiburg (Germany). The uncertainty is related to the fact that I don't remember well when our trip was precisely organised.
