Good day everyone,
I want to share with you my experience at our Cultural Day Celebration.
Last week Wednesday happened to be our school's Cultural Day (as indicated earlier in my introductory post that I am into teaching). Cultural Day is usually a day celebration where people (learners/students, teachers and parents) are dressed in different attires representing various ethnic groups.....
In Nigeria, there are over 250 ethnic groups, with Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo as the major ones./
.... parents, teachers and learners were categorised under different ethnic groups and we ensured we perform exactly in each tribe's way of life varying from their way of dressing, dancing, making their native dishes, dancing and others.
Below are pictures showing different ethnic groups; Tiv, Idoma and Fulani, (these were the only groups I could capture and the ones I did I couldn't get full pictures so you might be seeing portrait pictures mostly)
The Idoma
The idoma traditional attire is known as "Apa or Edema" with colours black and Red stripes. The black in Idoma clothing represents earth and burial shroud while the red represents royalty.
The Fulani
Their women attire is known as the 'Mudukare garment'. This is a myriad of red, green and blue fabric needlework. Their attire beautifies but it also serve as protection.
The Tiv
Their traditional attire is known as "A'nger" (This is spelt like anger but it is pronounced differently), it is patterned with colours white and black, the white colour signifies 'peace and love' while the black colour means 'that the Tiv people have their roots as black people from Africa'.
Other tribes present that day include;
Yoruba, Igbo, Edo, Igala,Hausa, Nupe, Ibibio and Kanuri.
This celebration actually gave us the platform to know more about other people's tribe, appreciate their uniqueness and love them better.
