My side hustle

Some of my colleagues say I am a multi-task person. I say yes to that because many times the income I earn from my office work is not always enough for me, so I decided to combine my work with a side hustle instead of depending on just a monthly income.

First of all, I embarked on the quest for which side hustle do I engage in that would give me my desired profit. I made few researches and decided to settle for rearing chicken for sale.

At first, I purchased a small space very close to where I live and employed a mason, who constructed a house for my chicks. By this time I had already bought some water and food carriers for the chicks including their foods and drugs.

Secondly, I went to a dealer and asked for the price of a day-old chick in a carton and was told the cost. I went back home and decided to cut down some of my expenses and began saving up money in order for me to start up the business.

As soon as I was able to raise the desired amount, I placed an order for a carton of day old chicks to start with, which I was told would arrive in a week from Ogun State located in the West. I waited patiently and on the arrival day, I took a day off from work and embarked on the collection of my day old chicks at the delivery venue. Surprisingly, I met a long queue at the delivery venue even when I arrived at the venue before 6:00am. I was number 30 to arrive and more people still arrived behind me.

We all stood there till about 10:00am before the day old chicks actually arrived and people began to struggle for it. Finally I was able to get mine even though it looked like I was the only one buying just a carton because others were buying three cartons or more.

Back home

When I got back home, I took my chicks to their new home. I put some light on for them which also served as a warmer. I fed them and checked on them daily. I managed to combine this with my job at my office and hoped for profitable returns at the end of my hustle.

My chicks grew from a day old to 3 weeks old and they surprisingly grew very fast and big. I began marketing my chicks to my colleagues at work and to friends and family. I even went as far as updating my social media status with my chicks and this way, I had so many people who were interested in the chicks and wanted to buy from me as soon as it was ready.

When my chicks became 6 weeks old, I sold them all out and at a very profitable price and gained much. I began to enjoy my side hustle until one day, tragedy struck, when my community got flooded with water from rainfall which overflowed into people's houses and my chicken farm was not exempted. I lost all my chicken that day to the flood and found it difficult to recover from the disaster.

After two months of the incident, I got another place which I suppose to be safer and better for my chicken farm. I decided to deal with the species of chicken known as layers, so that I can sell the eggs and also sell the layers when they can no more lay, and make profit.

Truth is, I have experienced a lot on my side hustle with my chicken farm, from buying the chicken food, drugs, checking on them consistently, cleaning up their mess and losing some of them to strange diseases.

It has been a bit hectic but profitable. You may as well pick up a side hustle today.
