This question is what I do ask myself when I feel embarrassed coughing in public or in an enclosed space with people. I so much detest having cough because it makes me feel awkward around people. It has been my habit for a long time to try to suppress the urge to cough in order to safe my face. I had thesame experience today with one of the parents in my school who gave me a free ride in her car. The air-condition was so cold that I started coughing immediately. I quickly covered my mouth and reach for water in the bag just to stop the cough. I think I get embarrassed because cough is communicable and could be symptoms for other disease. So I don't want people to think that I'm sick and seem as if they are prone to danger sitting next to me or beside me. After the incidence, I still asked myself if I should really be embarrassed and put myself in discomfort.

Everybody coughs, don't be embarrassed. If anyone says anything about it, just look at them cross-eyed and ask if they've ever coughed in public before.
