Life has an incredible ability to teach us lessons we never asked for, particularly concerning human nature🌿✨. Growing up, I was always taught to be kind and provide a helping hand wherever possible. However, life's twists and turns have taught me that being good is more of a habit, an internal compass guiding your acts, than a ticket to obtaining thanks or favours in exchange.
People aren't always thankful, and it's a difficult pill to swallow. My flatmate at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, was named John. We weren't close friends, but we got along well enough. One day, I was forced to defend John. He'd been accused of something he hadn't done, which could have caused him great disgrace. Knowing he was not guilty, I intervened, standing out on his behalf and preventing what could have been a horrible experience for him.
I expected John to say thank you, but his reply was almost nasty. He seemed to hate the fact that I had been engaged in the first place, despite the fact that my motives were good. His behaviour not only perplexed me, but it almost got me in trouble since some people assumed I was covering for him.
It was a moment that taught me that no matter how good your intentions are, people may not appreciate what you do for them. This wasn't the first time I'd done something for someone and felt unappreciated, but it was one of the most memorable. I felt offended and perplexed. It made me wonder if being good was worth it, especially when it tended to go unappreciated or even backfire.
Despite the disappointment, I couldn't see myself stopping. Being polite is about who you are rather than what you get in return. Life isn't always fair, and people aren't always appreciative, but that doesn't mean you should change yourself.
