Technology disruption is like an unexpected visitor to a party, they can stir up things or temporarily inconvenience you; annoying of course, but they can make you adjust plans. If we stop to examine the once-loved gadgets, platforms, and tools that our world was now full of but no more, it becomes very easy to see how fast technology changes. From CDs to streaming, from desktop PCs to smartphones, the disruption has been relentless. But it teaches us invaluable lessons.
Remember CDs?
Once upon a time, I was absolutely crazy for CDs. They were beautiful, shiny, and seemed space-age technology until the next minute they began to fade away. I can still remember going out and buying albums or putting together a collection of my favorite songs onto a disc. My room is crammed with these little fragile treasures, if one got lost it was like a disaster. Fast forward from there to now, and I can't remember when was the last time I held a CD in my hand. Spotify and Apple Music crushed CDs overnight, they are obsolete. Now with these streaming services you can access millions of songs immediately and without any mess.
The Rise and Fall of the USB Drive
The era of USB drives then arrived, or pen drives--how affectionately we used to call them. Portable, convenient, and a very top-class hack; at the time it seemed they had it all. But now? Cloud storage has relegated USB drives to backup roles. Why go around lugging a physical dingle dangle when you can access your files via Google Drive or Dropbox anywhere anytime?
Social Media Mundane
Let us talk about platforms and we will have to mention YouTube. YouTube broke viewing figures for regular television everywhere (whether they like it or not) and put control into the hands of individuals. It facilitated us a way to see anything from makeup demonstration to right-wing platform. And no sooner was YouTube thought invulnerable than along came TikTok, totally changed the nature of its content. Large influxes of enthusiasm were given over to short-form videos. TikTok lays particular stress on conversational banter and imagery, still too mysterious about its way of operating. This is a wonderful reminder that no matter how successful you are, you should always be prepared for challenges that can stir up things.
Smartphones: The Almighty Disruptor
The mighty smartphone. Remember the large computers we used to have? You had to sit down at one place to go onto the internet or send an e-mail. Now all that plus 4 'n some more lies in your pocket. Not only tech industries but also our lives have been turned upside down by them, changing everything from how we live now so that it's not like before.'
Lessons From Disruption
Adapt or die?
Technology disruption says don't stick to the old ways of doing things. CDs used to be fabulous until streaming did them away. Survival not just for companies but for ourselves too comes through changing.
Be open and nimble
Change waits for no man. If you fail to open up to change, the chances are that you will lose out on chances. It's as well to think this over: how many firms have now gone into history because they would not accept digitalisation?
All things must pass
Even the largest tech doesn’t last forever. One moment it could be TikTok and who knows what the next? Only by being clever and curious can you keep hanging on.'
What It Means For Us Today
Today, disruption is spiralling out of control in this modern world. AI is taking up tasks that only humans could do before. Cryptocurrencies are challenging the traditional banking system. The metaverse is trying to rethink how we can connect online and join others in virtual world, So here's my take. Let's roll. Technology will keep overthrowing our lives, but with each overthrowing comes room to think hard and think otherwise. When it comes to burning another CD you can count me out; that era is finished, and I won't look back...hahaha
