My Hive Goals: Good Intentions, and All That Rot!

in #hive-1503295 months ago

Welcome to the month of August!

So, a while back I reconfigured my Hive (and blogging) goals and decided that I needed to embark on a savings plan of sorts because I want to buy a new computer at the end of next year.

So far, I haven't really done terribly well with my ambition!

The Folly of Planning for "Normal" Life!

One of the things we often end up doing when we set our goals is looking at those goals through the lens of perception that we're living in an ideal world where things actually go as planned. That's not a blaming statement... it's something we are pretty much all guilty of!

But one of the truths about being alive is the fact that we do well to expect the unexpected!

What I mean by that, is that even the best intentioned goals can often be derailed by something "disturbing" that happens in your life.

For example, we might have this new savings plan set up, and after getting about a month into it, then you suddenly face a major car repair. That wasn't part of the plan...

A lot of the ostensible motivational gurus like to think that we should take the attitude of the universe always working with us rather than against us, but I think it would be more honest to say that the universe is actually completely neutral and neither works with us or against us. It simply is.

In this case, getting off track was thankfully not related to a major car repair stealing what little progress I already had made, it was more a case of various things unexpectedly happening — family wise — and in the world around us those things turned out to be a considerable time thief… meaning that my intended efforts to create more frequent blog posts simply went out the window because I had no time!

Reset and Restart

So now it is a new month and things seem to have settled down slightly, and maybe I can get restarted on my endeavor!

I consider myself neither a pessimist nor an optimist, but one of the more realistic things I've come to realize over the years is the fact that most things tend to typically take longer than expected, specifically because the unexpected rears its pesky head and interferes with what we had laid out, in terms of expectations.

That said, it's almost impossible to predict everything. And if we were to try to predict everything that could possibly distract us, our ambition level would probably end up being so low that nothing would ever get done!

Most things have hundreds of ways they could go wrong!

And so perhaps the most important gift we can give ourselves is a measure of forgiveness when things don't go according to plan, along with the ability and willingness to pivot and do things slightly differently when the unexpected does happen.

There is Still Time!

We still have a full five months to go of the year 2024, and I will try to make the most of those without becoming too attached to the eventual outcome.

It would be nice if I could substantially get close my original goal, but as long as I keep putting at least a consistent trickle into my HBD savings account it represents progress.

And that's really all I can ask for!

Thanks for coming to visit, and do leave a comment if you feel so inclined! This is "social" media, after all, so it helps everyone when we make the effort to BE social with our fellow content creators!

Sort:

Things don't always go as we expected or planned them to be. I wish you the best in all you do and may you save enough for your computer purchase.

Thank you! I plan to keep plugging away at it, and hopefully I can save enough to at least supplement the cost of a new machine... when the time comes.

Very good point about forgiving yourself when chaotic reality trips up your plans ! But keep on going, and eventually you'll get back on track. Or find a new, more interesting track.

For me, growing HBD is the prime goal, because the interest rate currently is so good. Now I've built up a small but respectable stack of HBD, the interest is where the majority of my HIVE earnings come from.

Something I read recently was that consistently leaving everything until the last minute and then finding it takes longer than you planned can be a sign of some types of neurodivergence. But I'm starting to think that some forms of neurodivergence could actually be a good thing and something the world needs more of 😉

We are definitely a neurodivergent household (ADHD, much?) so there's always a lot of "managing" of that going on here...

Perhaps the important thing is to really know yourself, and work according to whatever strengths and weaknesses you're consciously aware of... regardless of whether or not they happen to fit the "societally accepted norm."

God, I love been held back 10 years because of health issues, 5 years because of money issues, and 10 years because of emotional issues. It’s not to say I haven’t made any progress towards my goals or accomplished anything but I’ve recently said fuck it to all my fears, so the weights are off and I’m ready to go all out.

That reminds me though, I’m due for a new computer, 8 years though I have no idea where I’m getting one.

Hope to see more of you around hive, the best thing you can do is enjoy yourself and the money comes as it comes I guess

Seems like "there is always something" in the world to disrupt what we're trying to accomplish, so disruption is probably the norm, and not actually a disruption.

My computer is 11/12 years old, based on the processor serial number and it's getting harder to run the latest updates of anything, so a replacement is needed...

You are absolutely right! Life is sometimes unpredictable and throws unexpected challenges our way. It is great to hear you are ready to get back on track with your savings plan. Keep focusing on those small, steady steps, and you will be closer to reaching your goal.

Since "big steps" seem increasingly rare in this gig, I'm definitely going to continue with the small steps... if you leave a faucet dripping, it will eventually fill a bucket. You just have to be patient.

Absolutely true!
