How to survive the heat wave?

in #hive-1503293 years ago

At the moment it's burning hot. I changed my daily routine to coop with the heat. I wake up in the early morning, which is hard in the beginning as a nightowl 😉 But after a few days I'm used to it.
I open the windows in the bedroom and the sliding door in the living area, leaving all the doors open. This way I create a path from the light breeze outside. I install myself on the balcony with my coffee (a must!) and my laptop.
At around 10.30 am I go back inside and close all the windows and doors. Now it's a little bit cooler in the apartment.

I stay as much as possible inside until 6 pm. I make sure if I need to go out to do groceries I do them in the morning.
Time for my siesta now! At around 1 pm I take a little nap for maximum 2 hours. I feel refreshed afterwards and can continue my daily things.
The last couple of days I had a salad for dinner. Way to hot to start cooking. That will only heat up my place. Luckily I love salads and I'm a master in creation many versions. Yesterday for example I had one with mixed salad, 3 different kinds of cheese, apple, Serrano ham and dried cranberries and walnuts. Today I will have one with tuna and avocado. While having my dinner I watch a show on TV (at the moment I'm watching Hidden Assets).

Later that evening I go again on the balcony and mostly I read a bit in my hammock. I go to bed quite late, around 1 am.
It's also important to drink a lot during a heat wave. I mostly drink iced coffee latte and home made iced tea.
If you want to take a shower to cool down, don't start with cold water! This will give your body a kind of shock. It's better to start showering with lukewarm water and slowly switch to cold. And then finish with ice cold water!
I hope these tips can help you through the hot days!

It's much easier to get up this early when it's so hot, isn't it? I'm not a morning person either haha, but I'm motivated more to get up earlier because I know I will be happy to have my groceries in early so I won't have to carry stuff through the hottest moment of the day, and even worse: carry them up some stairs (they don't have an elevator here).

I have the option to go with the flow, unlike my boyfriend who has to be available for work all day, making it impossible to have a siesta, while I can just give in if I want to. The heat is draining if you ask me, I really need to give in some days.

That salad looks great! I love eating a salad instead of cooking when it's hot. No fun in a heated apartment for a meal lol. We've been eating/of just have a tapa outside the past days, and it's fine by me, at least then I will eat something decent :)

I'm wondering by the end of the week, how it will be in our new place, we are on the ground floor and it will be fun (or not) to find out if the place heats up a lot as we're up the mountain a bit (not all the way but you know how these streets go here in Spain lol). It will be good for the legs going up and down that hill every day while we don't have a car, lol.

Have a good week ahead! Glad it's cooling down a bit for the week..

Good that it's a bit cooler today! They just installed the mosquito screens so I can keep the windows open at night without being the favorite meal of those annoying bugs 😱 Hopefully the new place is cool enough for the summer. I guess you have quite busy days now. Take care and enjoy life in Spain!

I agree, I don't mind the cooler days. Especially not when moving stuff around again later this week.

Oh that must be great! I think I will need one for our windows too so I can keep them open, gonna put that on my list now so we can check that. I get bitten to death by them and have a severe allergic reaction to them so it's actually a must..

My boyfriend is just working during the day so we will move in the evening in a few days :)
We tried finding some household stuff yesterday but actually decided most of the stuff was just not what we want, Sunday the van needs to go back, so I wonder how we manage to get it all done before that as Friday is a holiday too.

Fingers crossed :)

Looks like you will have a very busy weekend ahead. Must be stressful. Is that the last move or is it also temporarily? Must be hard to change places all the times. I really hope that you will have your own place very soon and start enjoying living in Spain!

YES ABSOLUTELY ! @fiatgirl I'm currently living in Mexico in crazy heat! Before then Portugal and Spain and for sure you learn to cope with it you have to.
No air con and just boiling everyday. I choose heat over cold always.
:-)

Thanks for stopping by, I still don't know which I prefer. The warmth is better for my muscles, but it's easier to coop with cold. You just put on some extra layers. Sending an ice cream to stay cool! 😉🍧

Those tips I can use over here in Belgium too! Damn hot yesterday with 35C max.

awesome, thanks for the shower tip!

My pleasure, most people think that they should take a cold shower, but that's having the opposite effect. Glad you like it!

Oooooh gosh, yes it is hot here, I feel you! we are in Barcelona surviving :P
Where are you in Spain?? Sending you some cold breeze ;P

Torre-Pacheco, Murcia. Thanks for the breeze! In return I will send you an ice cream 😉🍧

Hehehe thank you!

Some great tips there. Do you find you adjust to having two periods of sleeping and waking in 24 hours? I always struggle to wake up if I nap in the afternoon.

I'm used to it. Even when there's no heat wave I take an afternoon nap. It can be difficult in the beginning. When I started with taking naps, I set an alarm to make sure I never slept more than 2 hours. I think it's a bit personal, some people have enough with one hour, some need more. Most important is to listen to your body and not force things.
Thanks for stopping by!

Setting the alarm is a good idea! Thanks for that tip 😍

You're welcome. Especially when you start with taking naps your body "thinks" it's your big sleep time, and you will sleep long. With the result you can't sleep at night. So you have to learn your body that naps are just for a short period to recover a bit. Good luck!

Wow those tips are very new to me and I can already tell that it will be useful... Will try it out during our hot season. It's freezing here now 😬

Glad I could share this to help people dealing with the heat. It's easier when it's cold, you just put on an extra layer, but with the heat I'm already running around in the lightest clothes I have.
Try to stay warm! I'll send you some hot chocolate ... ☕

Hahaha I would love some hot chocolate 😍
