On the first day of school, Lucy met a guy named Zach. Lucy was a girl who came from an ordinary family, while Zach came from a rich family. Their teacher, Mr. Wilson, said they were both equally smart. Zach was arrogant and thought he was smarter, but in fact, Lucy was smarter than him. It has been proven when they wrote each other's answers on the blackboard about solving math problems in their own way. After he realized that, Zach felt rivaled and he became suspicious of Lucy. Then Lucy started to be bothered by him.
"I'm home," said Lucy when she opened the door to her house. She just got home from school. Her face didn't look happy. Her arrival was greeted by her mom, Mrs. Campbell.
"Oh, welcome. How's your first day at school, dear? Have you learned something and made new friends?" asked Mrs. Campbell.
Lucy sighed. "Yeah, I've learned something. But, today's not as fun as I thought," then she sat down on the sofa in the living room.
"Why, dear? Did something happen to you?" Mrs. Campbell was a little worried.
"At first I thought I'd make new friends, but I haven't had any. I just met an annoying guy," said Lucy with a frown on her face. Then she explained what had happened at her school. Her mom listened well.
Mrs. Campbell chuckled and responded, "So his name is Zach? From everything you've told me, he seems to have similiar traits as you. And do you know? I think you have a rival. That's why he bothers you, because he doesn't wanna lose to you, Lucy."
Lucy gasped. "What? Rival? Ohh, no wonder he's so annoying, and I hate him!" She asserted.
"Lucy, having a rival is good, your abilities will also increase," Mrs. Campbell smiled.
Then she told her daughter. When Mrs. Campbell was young, she also had a rival in class. Her rival has almost the same traits as Mrs. Campbell. But her rival was a smart girl, almost every semester she always got the first rank. It made Mrs. Campbell jealous of her, and she had hated her, although her rival didn't really hate Mrs. Campbell. At that time Mrs. Campbell became very active in studying so that she could beat her rival. And it turned out that her hatred of her rival didn't last long. Mrs. Campbell finally got the first rank. Even her rival were also pleased with Mrs. Campbell's success. Then Mrs. Campbell realized the kindness of her rival. And they finally reconciled. And after completing education, Mrs. Campbell's rival worked as a lecturer at a university.
"Whoa, Unbelievable, you can finally get along and be good friends with her! But, mom, how's her life now? Is she still a lecturer?" Lucy asked curiously.
"Sadly, due to an accident she had a few years ago, she has passed away," Mrs. Campbell answered. Her eyes were teary from almost crying.
"Oh, mom. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope she rests in peace there," Lucy was concerned about her.
"So... Lucy, since you have a rival, do your best. You can compete with him, but sometimes you also need to be nice to him. I know you hate him, and it'll be hard for you. But I hope you can reconcile with Zach soon," Mrs. Campbell advised Lucy.
"Okay, thank you very much, mom," Lucy hugged her mom.
The next day, Lucy went to school by bike. In the middle of the road a black car passed beside her. When the windshield opened, and Zach was inside. Lucy was a bit surprised.
Zach looked out the window and said, "Oh, it's lousy Lucy. Bye-bye, loser! Hahaha," he taunted Lucy who was riding a bike.
Geez, Zach is a real rich guy, he even has a car. But his behavior was very bad to me. Do I need to be nice to him like mom said? Oh, no way. My mom can only talk and don't know what it's like, thought Lucy.
When she arrived at school, Lucy immediately headed to the storage locker to put down her backpack. She saw Zach among the crowd of students. But he just kept quiet and didn't talk to them. That day Zach still had no friends. But when he saw Lucy, he bothered her again.
"Hey, lousy Lucy! Whoa, you arrived on time, huh? I thought you'd be late and arrive after class, hahahaha!" He laughed.
"Nope, stupid. And can you stop calling me like that?" Lucy was annoyed. She slammed the locker door shut.
"But that nickname fits you very well, lousy Lucy," then he saw Lucy's face, which was holding her tears. "Ohh my gosh, look at your face, are you gonna cry? Ha ha! Well, I guess I was too rough with this girl. But I don't care about you, because soon you'll be a loser!"
Lucy changed her facial expression. "Loser? Oh I see... Okay, now I know what you mean. Now I'm your rival, right?"
"Oh, you already know that. Yeah, now you're my rival. And I'll be the best and most accomplished student in this class. So I won't let you win," Zach smiled confidently.
Then the bell rang and they heard it. "Okay, I won't let you beat me either. Just wait and see, Zach Silly-ams," Lucy left him.
"Wait, what the heck? How dare you change my surname?!" Zach said loudly then entered the classroom.
When the class started, the teacher explained the lesson and gave some assignments to the students. The students did their assignments carefully. Zach always got B marks on his assignments. But sometimes he also got an A, only in English lesson. Then he felt smarter than his classmates because of his marks.
But after that he was surprised when he found out Lucy's marks. Not only Zach, but the others were also surprised. Even the teacher praised her. Lucy got lots of A's and A+'s on all of her assignments, Except in Math, she got a B. Lucy was very good at various subjects. However, she didn't like Math because it was a bit difficult for her. And that's one of her weaknesses.
Zach really couldn't believe what had happened. Even though he had just become Lucy's rival, but he lost first. It made him upset and dissatisfied. Moreover, he saw the satisfied expression on Lucy's face, he became even more jealous.
"Hey, what a silly face? Seems like someone who usually annoys me is getting annoyed right now. Isn't it, Zach Silly-ams?" Lucy asked when they were in front of the storage locker. Class was over and it was time for them to go home. Lucy was satisfied that day because she had gotten good marks and then saw Zach's slumped face.
"Sucks! Why did you get such high marks? You're obviously taking private lessons, right? Don't lie!" Zach said with kinda angry.
"Oh, it's nothing. And how many times do I have to tell you? I. Have. Never. Taken. Private. Lessons. Are those words not clear enough for you?" Lucy said the truth in her high pitched voice.
"It's nothing, you say?! How the hell could you possibly get that many A's? While I mostly get B's. Are ya cheating?" Zach became curious and grew angry.
Lucy was surprised and started laughing. "That's it? Was it just because of that trivial matter that you became like this? Oh my, hahaha. You're just like a little kid!" Lucy laughed and really couldn't believe Zach's behavior this time.
"Shut up! It's nothing yet. This time you may win, but soon you'll lose! Just watch out, lousy Lucy!" Zach immediately got out of there and left Lucy.
