After listening to what her mom said, Lucy realized that Zach was her class rival. That's why he always bothered her. Then they both decided to do their best at school so that they could beat each other. At first, Zach always annoyed Lucy, and usually he was satisfied everytime he managed to upset Lucy. But when in class, he found that Lucy's assignment marks were higher than him. After that their situation turned around, Zach became annoyed because he felt defeated, while Lucy was satisfied because of that.
The first week of school is over. That morning, Lucy had just arrived at school. She was walking through the school hallway to her classroom. Suddenly, she saw a skinny and rather short girl being surrounded by 3 tall girls. The tall girls seemed to be yelling and scolding the short girl, even one of them pushed her until her head almost hit the wall. Lucy recognized that the girl was her classmate. She was being bullied by seniors. Seeing that, Lucy didn't stay silent, she immediately helped the bullied girl.
Lucy approached them. "Hey, hey! Stop it! What are you doing? What really happened? Stop it now!"
Then one of them responded, "Huh? You're telling us to stop this? Who the hell are you?" She asked with her eyes glaring at Lucy.
"If you wanna know, this damn girl has nudged me and dropped my lipstick on the floor and made it dirty. Yesterday she also didn't wanna clean our classroom, even though we always forced her to," said the girl who pushed the short girl.
"But you don't have to treat her like this. Don't you have feelings? Besides, why did you force her to clean your classroom? That should be your duty. Don't you think? What you did was wrong!" Lucy was mad at them.
"We don't care. It's none of your business. After all, you're nobody and have nothing to do with us. So there's no need to interfere!" The tallest girl snapped at Lucy.
"I'm her classmate. And of course, I have to interfere! If you bully her again, I'll report your actions to the principal," then Lucy grabbed the short girl's hand and led her away from them. "Just ignore them and let's get out from here," she said. Then the 3 tall girls also left the place.
Lucy and her classmate walked quickly to near the classroom. Then they stopped and Lucy let go of the girl's hand.
"Are you okay?" Lucy asked worriedly.
"Y-yes, I'm okay," she answered nervously. "T-thank you so much for your help. If you weren't around, I would still be bullied by them," she thanked Lucy.
"Yep, you're welcome. By the way, I heard you were also dropped their stuff. Is it true?" Lucy asked her again.
"Yeah, that's true, but I didn't mean to. I'm sorry," she answered guiltily.
"No, it's not your fault. They're the ones who are at fault, why should they bully you just because of that? Hmph, those are unworthy seniors. You must be careful. And if they bully you again, you should report them to the teacher next time," Lucy advised her. Then she immediately turned around and immediately entered the classroom.
"Oh, wait!" The girl restrained Lucy. "Umm... Thank you very much, you're so good to me. And since we're classmates, can we be friends?" She asked to be friends with Lucy.
Lucy responded with a smile. "Oh, sure! Why not? Okay, so... I'm Lucy Campbell. And what's your name?" She asked for the girl's name.
"I'm Clara Madison. Nice to meet you, Lucy," she gestured for a handshake.
"Nice to meet you too, Clara," then she shook Clara's hand. "I hope we can be good friends. Oh, did you hear that? Let's go to the classroom," she said when she heard the bell rang.
Zach apparently saw that too. For some reason, he was also jealous. Zach, who had no friends at that time, saw his rival make a new friend. He was really annoyed, because he felt lost to Lucy that day and the day before. Then he decided to be considerate of others and not indifferent. However it was not easy for him because he's an introvert. But, little by little he tried not to be too quiet. But still, he was still awkward towards people he didn't know.
During sports practice class, the male students in the class competed to play basketball with other classes. While the female students became the audience. They played basketball on the sports field next to the school building. Clara asked Lucy to watch it together. At first Lucy was not interested. But Clara kept asking her, so in the end she joined in watching because maybe she also wanted to know more about basketball. They sat on the chairs provided on the edge of the sports field.
The sports teacher, Mr. Johnson, asked 5 students to be the team representatives from their respective classes. Then from Lucy's class there were only 4 students who volunteered to represent their class. Seeing this, then Mr. Johnson decided to randomly appoint one of the male students to complete the team.
"Hey, you! Would you like to play basketball?" Mr. Johnson pointed to Zach who was sitting on the audience seat.
"Me?" Zach was confused.
"Yes, you! Please come here and be a part of this team!" He said.
"Yeah, bro! Come on, and play basketball with us!" The 4 classmates said.
Then Zach thought first. Then he decided, "hmm... Okay, I'm gonna play basketball with you guys. I think it's okay to try," Zach walked up to them and agreed to be a part of their team.
Clara saw Zach and then asked Lucy. "Hey, Lucy. Look at that guy! I've seen you two talked to each other. Is he your friend too?" She pointed at Zach.
"That annoying guy is my friend? Uhh... Nope, it's impossible. He's more like my enemy than my friend," Lucy said with a frown on her face.
"Your enemy? But why?" Clara was curious.
"He's so arrogant and annoying. He always annoys and taunts me. And that's why he looks like an enemy to me because I hate him very much!" Lucy explained with her annoyed expression.
"Oh, I see. But even though he's like that, I dunno why I think he looks quite handsome," Clara blushed a little.
Lucy sighed. "Geez. You know what? He just has an advantage in his appearance. You shouldn't judge someone if it's only from the outside," she advised Clara.
"Well, I think you're right," Clara agreed. Then they turned their attention back to the basketball game.
The basketball game starts. The players played well and didn't cheat. However, there was something that made the audiences feel like they couldn't believe it. Even Mr. Johnson was amazed. It all happened because Zach played so amazingly. He scored many times in the opponent's basket. He was really talented at playing basketball. And as a result, the basketball game was won by his team. Lucy was gaping and rubbing her eyes, she really couldn't believe what she saw.
Zach and his classmates won a basketball game. And it's all thanks to him. The audience clapped and cheered in awe at his prowess. After that all the classmates came and gathered around Zach.
"That's sick, bro! What's your name?" The blonde haired guy asked him.
"Thanks, that was nothing. I'm Zach Williams," he answered.
"You're so cool, even your name is cool too! Can we be friends?" asked the curly haired guy while patting Zach's shoulder.
"Yeah, right! Come on, be our friend! We'd love it if you became friends with us!" Said his other classmates.
Zach smiled. "Okay, I'll be your friend. Besides, I didn't have any friends at this school before. I hope we become good friends," he said.
"HURRAYYYY!!!" Then all of Zach's new friends embraced him until they entered the classroom.
Lucy who was still sitting, was completely confused and couldn't believe her class team could win because of Zach. And Zach also immediately got a lot of friends because of his talent. Meanwhile, Lucy has only made one friend. She felt a little jealous, Because Zach was clearly talented and made a lot of friends.
Then the recess bell rang. Clara asked Lucy to go to the canteen to have lunch together. They went to the storage locker near their classroom first, to take their lunch box. But suddenly, Clara wanted to go to the toilet. Then asked Lucy to go to the canteen first because she would follow after from there. So she did as Clara said and went first to the canteen to occupy their table.
Lucy went to the canteen first and took an empty table near the wall. She saw Zach and his 4 new friends having lunch together at the table next to her. They share food, talk, and even laugh with each other. It looked really fun to have lunch with good friends like that.
Ugh, how did that happen? Why did this quiet and annoying guy get so many friends just because of his talent? But I just got a friend today. Does that mean he won today? Lucy wondered in her mind. Then Clara came up from behind her and tapped her on the shoulder surprising her.
"Gosh, I was shocked, you know! Luckily I haven't eaten yet, if I was eating I would have choked because of you," said Lucy surprised.
"Sorry, I'm sorry, but I didn't mean to startle you. So don't just daydream. What are you thinking about?" Clara asked then sat down in a chair and put her lunch box on the table.
"Nope, it's nothing. By the way, Clara, do you actually have any friends at this school besides me?" She asked.
"Why do you ask that?" Then Clara looked at the table beside her. "Oh I see, you're jealous of him who has a lot of friends, right?" Clara asked in a low voice.
"No, it's not like that. Umm... but I think that's true too," said Lucy.
"Is that so? Do you know, I have other friends too. But today they are absent because they are sick," Clara said. "And one more thing, I don't think you need to be jealous of him. You said he was annoying and bothered you a lot, right? But now, he's busy with his new friends, so he forgot to bother you today. Wouldn't it be nice if you weren't bothered by him?" She added.
Then Lucy realized it. "Oh yeah, you're right. I just realized that today I haven't been bothered by him at all. Thanks for telling me," Lucy chuckled.
"Yeah, yeah, you're welcome. Okay, now let's eat before the break time is up," Then they opened their lunch box and started eating their lunch.
And that was the first moment when Lucy and Zach made new friends in that middle school. Even though Lucy only made one friend and Zach made a lot of friends that day. But Lucy was happy because she realized that Zach's friends were so many, he didn't have time to bother Lucy at all. And Lucy was calmer than usual that day.
