The “cultured meat” alternative
JBS, one of the largest companies in the “meat” and derivatives sector for consumption, wants to transform the way we see the production of animal protein with its new “cultured meat” factory in the laboratory, but this technological innovation is really the future of the Food or just another empty promise.
With an initial production capacity of 1000 tons per year with the possibility of expanding to up to 4,000 tons, JBS wants to lead the alternative protein revolution; But it is really “cultured meat” that is the solution to the challenges we face today, while some celebrate this innovation as an “ethical and sustainable” “alternative”; others raise questions about the real environmental impact of this technology.
The construction of the factory in Spain is only part of JBS's ambitious plans. In addition to this venture, the company plans to build a state-of-the-art center for research and development of biotechnology and cultured protein in Florianópolis in Brazil, with an estimated investment of 6 million dollars.
