Everything about nature is beautiful that's why you see vegetation, the flowers, crops, trees and others plants come alive during spring and when the rain starts. Green is a special color and that's why it indicates new beginning, life, freshness, growth or fertility.
When I saw the topic for this week's #pobphotocontest - green, the first thing that came to my mind was this popular song - The land is green by one Nigerian artist, T Y Bello. In the song she painted herself as a farmer who after cultivating and seeing the green land showing that the crops yielded, hopes to reap bountifully.
Excerpt from the chorus read
The land is green, it's green oooo
The land is green, it's green
can't you see... ?
When you listen to the song, you'll understand it's background and meaning and I'm sure you'll love it.
So back to subject of discussion which is green, I've got some photos which can fit in although it's not the best of them.
Here's one, a carpet grass field
I had gone to this compound in my neighborhood to get some vegetables there and on entering the compound this carpet grass field caught my eyes. It's just located at the center of the compound so anyone coming in will see it. I just appreciated how it has beautified the environment. I can remember how it looked like an abandoned field with no life in it as the grasses all died off during the dry season. But with the coming of the rains, they have all sprouted back to life showing that the land is green.
Moving away from there to where I will get the vegetable I passed by this plant you see here. It's actually a vegetable and we call it ukazi which is wild spinach in English. Ukazi is a popular vegetable used in preparing some of our special local soups like afang of the ibibios and efik, ukazi and achara of the Igbos.
Another plant I captured there is this banana tree. Looking at it you can see that it already has a bunch of banana fruits on it. The fruits are still developing and will stay some months more before being fully mature and ready to be eaten. I love eating bananas and I hope you do too.
And finally this is the vegetable I came for and it's called Gongronema latifolium or Utazi in my local dialect. It's almost sounding like ukazi, lol.
Utazi is also a climbing vegetable that spreads too. Utazi is a very powerful plant as the leaves are used in culinary and medicinal areas.
For the culinary, the leaves, which are bitter are used as flavoring for peppersoups, abacha known as african salad and other dishes.
Coming to the medicinal aspect, extracting the juice and then drinking can help stop constipation, stomach upset, throwing up. This is due to its bitter properties it contains, arrhh! It's bitter and sweet at the same time and I bet you will crave for more if you taste it. 😊
So I took the much I needed and went back home
Thank you for reading.
Still the #threadsaddict 😂
