I have noticed lately that our evolution in the world, throughout our history, has brought about some small incidents involving agents outside of our own uncontrolled evolutionary plan.
As we have improved our condition of life, we have thought that these changes have only affected our condition. We have become self-absorbed, thinking that the world is not part of our habitat, as if everything around us wants to kill us or hinder us. we have thought that we are special and that we have a gift that makes us superior to everything that lives with us. But we are not.
The rest of the animals do not even reach our ankles in imaginative capacity, it is true. That led us to believe without a doubt that we are not part of this nature that we avoid, that makes us uncomfortable and puts barriers in our progress. That is what we have thought.
I remember that on a certain occasion I told one of my students, I don't remember the reason, that we are all animals and he stared at me as if looking for the smile on my face that denotes the joke. I didn't know he was as animal as a dog. And I am talking about a boy of about 13 years old.
Now, in these times we have seen the achievements that our intellect has guaranteed us and at the same time the problems that nature imposes on us. It seems like a war. But there is a small detail that either we have not seen, or we do not want to see. To win this war is to lose it.
The lion that kills to eat will never be able to eat so much as to put his food at risk. There are not that many lions, and their prey reproduces in sufficient numbers. It is a balance that we have understood for a long time. However, we do not obey this rule. And that gift that "glorifies" us also excludes us.
It is because of this curious separation between us and the rest of the beings that live here with us that we have seen our world at risk.
Let's think about this. We hate the virus because it takes advantage of its host to reproduce and live, not caring if in doing so it kills the host. We hate them because we do not see them, and our pride is destroyed knowing that we were not killed by the tiger or the lion or the snow or the drought, but by the ghost that seeks us. That poisonous ghost that closes our eyes and leaves us in the room. But we hate them because being so weak, so helpless, so illogical, they do so much harm. And finally, we hate them because we discover a small detail: they are like us, and we hate the irony that this involves.
Evolution does not belong to our species, it should never belong to us. Each of our achievements must be the achievement of the rest of the life that accompanies us on this planet and especially of those who help us directly. We should not take advantage of the world, but make it evolve. Because by improving it, we improve ourselves. It is not to maintain the balance, it is to be the balance, because it seems that, nowadays, when the human improves, the environment around him gets worse; and, little by little, the world will make him balance downwards, it will pull him by the feet so that he does not go so far.
If we are going to live, we should not live far away from what life gives us. We have done so many stupid things on our journey that it would be even more foolish to continue doing them. We must improve the world, not fight it. Cure the world so that it does not make us sick.
