Spanish was the 3rd language I learnt in life, and I have lived in Spain in total for 2 years. Well the point being actually that I never did fully learn it, because where I lived in Spain was all English speaking. It was enough just to learn many words and easy to talk in the present tense and I got by well.
Now that I am settling in México, I need to finish off learning spanish. One problem.. its not even Spanish because its been adapted so much by the Mexican people.
To be honest I am not sure how I have managed up til now without being interested and using gramatics. Today I took a dive into past tense (I have never been interested in grammar, the names of different things like verbs and nouns, and learn it last normally when I learn a new language. At school I found English classes boringand irrelivant.) Its time to progress with Spanish.
Spanish I find to be the hardest

Out of 5 languages I have l learnt on top of my mother tounge language english, it is the hardest for me. Maybe as I couldnt ever pick up French so well its related. This is the order of what languages I learnt.
- Mandinka (a language from west Africa)
- Thai
- Spanish
- German
- Norwegien
Mandinka
Is an unwritten language originating in Mali. I was learning it in The Gambia. Simple words, no masiciline or femine, and very basic grammar. I learnt it quite fast, within 2 months I was speaking it well, and writing didnt exist!
Thai
This is a really hard language to learn because each word has 5 tones it can be said in, and each tone is a different word. So yes, one word has 5 meanings. Also there are if I remember right, 74 symbols as an alphabet. Within a month, I was speaking understandable thai, but making insulting mistakes due to the wrong tones. "Delicious" and the C word for vagina, are quite simular...
Even with all this, the gramatics was not as hard as spanish!
German
I started to learn german words in spain, lots of germand where i was and it was the second most spoke language with foreiners. I was dating a german woman at the time to.
German sounds well ugly and makes no sense to someone new to it. Once you get it though, it makes a lot of sense and is easy to get, and to work out what and object is by the name of it. Theres again no masc or fem, and just a past tense where you mostly add "Ge" and change the word a bit to make it past tense.
...Easier than Spanish!
Norwegien
Simple language, German roots so it was easy to learn after being in Germany.
Once I have learnt the past tense in spanish them my spanish skills will be great. Dont feel bad if your struggling with Spanish, your not the only one!
