National Museum of Oman is a learning ground for those who wants to understand the history and culture of this Country. The Museum is fairly new, it was opened to public in 2016. Before this there was no Museum in the Country which would display the Oman civilisation, heritage, culture and traditions all under one roof. There were some small museums but they were hardly a tourist attraction. With this Museum opening up, now the Country has a window to showcase what Oman is and how it's been all built up.
When is known for it's ports, forts, traditional dhows (small sailing ships), mountains with terrace gardens, dates and the beautiful coast line that it has. This museum talks about the Country's history and it's development.
I have been twice to this museum. In my first visit my focus was on the Maritime history gallery, and the other parts were just run through. This time my focus was on the People's Gallery, and specially on the traditional jewelry part.
As a female this is one thing that I like to see, the various types of jewelry that run across centuries and also I observe that everything we use in today's time is just a modified version of the past centuries. There is very little new invention being done in this category, most of it is modified from the olden days.
This is a complete set of jewelry that ideally a woman will wear from head to toe. It includes a Head chain, earrings, neck wear choker, arm rings, bangles, anklets. Similar styles are found in India as well. If this display would just be left nameless with no description, then anyone having a look at it will say it is a traditional India jewelry.
These are different types of earrings and rings.
Different patterns of neck wears. Most of these patterns are very simple. the designs are circles with dots.
This is a fancy one. The designs are all in geometric patterns. In the past all the jewelry was made of silver and it was bulky, gold was also in use but less. Nowadays it is the opposite, people prefer wearing gold and not silver. Gold being expensive in comparison to silver, the size of the jewelry pieces have also become smaller else it would never be affordable with this size.
While a lot of it is there for the woman, but for man also there are things that they would carry on them as their jewelry and fashion statement. For them it is the dagger and the sword which they consider it very prestigious to carry. Now also if there are any official events, the people in higher ranks carry a dagger on their waist belt. It symbolizes power and authority.
These are some of the much older pieces where you will see that there is hardly any design on it.
Times have changed now, and people do not prefer to wear so much bulky. Even if it is silver, people like it small and contemporary. I cannot imagine so much weight on my body. But in the olden times people did wear them on regular basis. Now also in the interiors in some part, I see that females still wear them just like a daily costume.
Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸
