During the Christmas days, I noticed that bells were an important part of the celebration. While, it is an crucial item for christmas decoration, many popular Christmas songs even feature bells in their melody, like "Jingle Bells" and "Silver Bells." The ringing of bells signifies the spreading of good news and joy, mirroring the message of Christmas. In Hinduism too, bells occupy an important place. We often see Bells hung at the temple dome in front of the Garbhagriha (main sanctrum). They are usually large in size to produce a louder sound. The bell is also known as Ghanta in Sanskrit has an immense importance.

There are two aspect associated with tying a bell in temples, each of them holds their own significance. As per the religious aspect and mentioned in the "Skanda Purana", ringing bells in a temple can dissolve sins committed in this life and past lives. The bell is used to create a sacred atmosphere and invoke the divine presence during worship rituals. The sound of the bell is said to help control the mind and focus on the deity. Devotees ring the bell to inform the deity of their arrival and to invite the divine

The scientific reason behind the use of bells in temples is complex and involves the use of specific metals and alloys, as well as the shape and design of the bell. Temple bells are made from a variety of metals, including copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, nickel, manganese, and chromium. The proportion of each metal is carefully calculated to create a distinct sound. The shape of the bell activates the sense of hearing and creates balance between the left and right sides of the brain. When struck, the bell produces a sharp but long-lasting vibration that can last for at least seven seconds. This vibration is said to touch the seven chakras, or healing centers, in the body. The bell is designed to vibrate at a specific frequency that is similar to the cosmic vibration "Om". This vibration is said to connect us to a divine vibration and balance the chakras.

I have been to temples many a times and seen kids playing with the bells. But as soon as I rang it, it produces an 'aura of calmness' that increases concentration and puts the mind in a state of trance. There are so many things involved in every basic things in life but never ever thought the reasons. There is so much fun in learning new things in life.
