The Pygmalion Effect: How Belief and Expectations Can Shape Our Performance

Have you ever had someone believe in you and your abilities, and it made you work harder and achieve more? That's the Pygmalion effect in action.

Named after a Greek myth of a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he created, the Pygmalion effect is all about the power of belief and expectations. It was first studied by two scientists in the 1960s, who found that when teachers expected certain students to do well, those students ended up outperforming their peers by the end of the year.

The reason it works is simple: when we believe we can do something, we're more likely to make it happen. It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. When someone has high expectations of us, it pushes us to work harder and achieve more. But, when someone has low expectations of us, it can limit our potential and make us believe we can't do it.

It's important to keep in mind that the Pygmalion effect can also have a negative impact, high expectations can lead to increased stress and pressure, and low expectations can lead to underachievement.

In short, the Pygmalion effect is a powerful thing that shows how much our performance can be influenced by the expectations of others. When someone believes in us, it can push us to reach our full potential, but when someone has low expectations it can limit our abilities. It's always best to just support one another, than putting expectations on each other.
