For a sustainable future.

A few weeks ago the World Health Organization decreed the end of the pandemic, however, in my country we have experienced a series of viral diseases that have many coincidences with Covid-19 and its variants. This whole process got me thinking about what it means to comply with the UN Agenda 2030 about a sustainable future and what we are going to leave to future generations.

All this led me to reflect on the meaning of sustainable future, in my case from my profession as an engineer I know that we have done much damage to the planet with practices that catered to the comfort of humans but harmed the lives of all other species that inhabit the planet. In these practices where geographical areas have been overpopulated with a displacement of habitat, rivers, indiscriminate logging and where fertile fields have been destroyed due to the construction of large housing complexes that threaten the environment.

To understand sustainability and establish a commitment to it, it is necessary to internalize that we are not the most numerous species inhabiting the planet, we must change this way of acting as if everything depended on us and our life and that to do so we must despise and make other species disappear. Our existence depends on our relationships with mother earth and with every being that inhabits it. We, the people, have dedicated ourselves for years to take advantage of everything without even thinking about our own children. Today, in a world that is dying and we have destroyed rapidly, we must think about what we urgently need to change.

The fundamental objectives of sustainability are based mainly on a global change of thinking that brings with it plans, programs and actions to stop the damage caused to the planet, but also to generate systems and ways of life that are friendly to the environment. The contamination of drinking water in rivers and lakes, the poisoning of the oceans and seas due to toxic waste, the production of garbage and everything that is a consequence of the indiscriminate production processes of industrialized countries have brought us to the limit of destruction.

It is urgent to understand that the change must be fast and effective, otherwise we will not have the opportunity to stop and begin a process of healing the earth. To understand that we cannot spend the rest of our existence on the planet with the same destructive practices, because it seems that after the pandemic, there are those who did not understand the message, the pandemic was created by the hand of man (which gives us much to think about) or was the result of a continuous and systematic abuse of the human species (which continues to be our fault) should give us the opportunity to reflect and find a way to repair so much damage.

A future can only be envisioned if we truly embrace the sustainability proposal and create spaces to address and heal the wounds we have left on the planet. Later I will be delving into the goals of the UN Agenda 2030 but I would like you to comment if you know what these goals are and which from personal practices we can meet. Leave your comment that will help me to grow and debate.
