Newbie Guide: Engagement vs Interacting (Something we all need to check from time to time)

Good day everyone! This is Zak from Cape Town, South Africa and this is another Blogging tutorial to help out the Newbies from the entire community, but of course I would like to tag in the Minnows and Redfish of the Busy Bees Activity Group. But I shall add the Tags at the bottom of this post to make this post a bit more pretty.

And although this is something that is certainly useful for the Redfish and Minnows to learn as they grow, it is something I need to check myself (at Dolphin level) that I do this correctly, so my peers would benefit from this advice as well.

On Hive, we get told by many that posting consistently is the path to growth. And if you want to increase the earnings of your posts, then the best way to improve that growth is to engage with others and expand your friends/followers.

If you are using the Ecency Front end then when you look at the Discover button, you will see the following:

The above shows you the Most Active users on Ecency. You can change the criteria to Daily, Weekly and Monthly.

One thing I can guarantee, is that if you can get on list from time to time, you will benefit. You will naturally create a bigger stir for yourself, also, you will gain followers and people watch this list.

What are Activities?
Almost anything. Posts, Comments, Replies and Wave (short form) posts. If you have a bit of time on your hands, instead of being a Redfish that posts 5 posts a week, I would rather have you post 3 times and have you focus on your Activity count above in ANY shape or form.

Usually, people call that Activity count "increasing your engagement".

There are two concepts that are not broadly shared or spelled out by anyone:

#1 - The Difference between Engagement and Interacting.

This is not something that is writing anywhere but if you want real Engagement for your growing account, then you need to understand what the difference is between Engagement and Interacting!

And by no means am I telling you to stop doing either. But I do want you to conscious of it and make sure that you do both!

To interact is to react to something. This is like replying to a comment on your post. They commented on your post and now you follow up with a reply of your own. This can spark a conversation that goes back and forth.

The same thing can happen on Waves. Together, these actions count a lot of Activities for you on your feed and makes you rank up in the above chart quickly and easily.

Interacting might even be commenting on posts made by someone you interact with on a daily basis. Someone who posts every day that you comment on every day is also what I would call Interacting.

Again, there is nothing wrong with this, and you should continue doing it!

Engagement that you need to try and drive is making sure that you go out and support those people who post less frequently that you follow/are friends with. You also should go look on the Communities where you post and go look for people you don't know. Upvote and comment on their posts.

If you spoke to at least one new person on Hive every day, you are likely to gain at least 100 followers in a year's time and that would be extremely beneficial for you!

#2 - Engagement as the Lifeblood of Hive

This next concept that is for EVERYONE. From the noob to the veteran on Hive:

We need to keep our Engagement up since there are not enough spectators.

I am a content creator. I get really busy and sometimes all I have time for is to create and React/Interact with my replies and people I follow on a daily basis. You can favourite someone on your feed, that way you can have the "friends" list who you watch avidly on that notification level, meanwhile your feed can fill up with 100s of people's posts who you followed but are not actively looking at.

It is essential that we go and support other posters, including those that we do not support on a daily basis.

For myself, I use the Busy Bees list from time to time to look for persons that are members that I have not Engaged and Supported recently. I cannot upvote all the Busy Bees every day. VP does not stretch enough!

I also use the Discover button and then look at names there... not just the ones at the top. Then look for their most recent posts less than 6 days old and generally choose one of those to upvote and read and engage with.

I also go to community feeds and look for creators/content that I want to support.

By making sure these people are supported, Hive continues. Without the people, there is not City, no Community and no Commerce.

The Orcas and Whales and other parties want to use Hive and its utility. But in order make the platform work and really grow, we need to bring and retain users. True Engagment makes sure that user retention continues.

The Hive user list has 41 Whales, under 283 Orcas,1766 Dolphins and 8790 Minnows. There are over 2 Million users registered on Hive. So... the rest are Redfish. A bare 10,880 users sit in the Minnow level and up.

We need to grow the Redfish that are active to Minnows and the Minnows to Dolphins. All the while we need to retain our posters.

So your Engagment with my posts help me and motivate me. Trust me, your proper engagement with others helps them more than you know!

So go ahead! If you want more from Hive, then engage!

I see your hard work everywhere Zack, i am happy we have someone like you on the blockchain, you have indeed said it all sir, engagement is indeed the key to growth on the hive blockchain, there’s no shortcut to success on hive, it is either you work hard and engage or you still work hard and engage, the choice is yours. I have favorited some people to know when they post and i think so far it’s been going well, i will also try to broaden… thanks for this beautiful piece sir… we will do our utmost best to get everyone up and going….

💪💪💪 100% Great attitude! With a plan of action, you will go far on Hive!

I really agree with what you said my brother, to grow quickly the words Involvement and Interaction are really needed. But today I can't do that because the network at my place is very bad. Just making a post is very difficult. Best wishes always, brother.

Do what you can, when you can 👍

that is for sure

To grow on hive is very important to reach out and comment on people's content and also be available to reply to people's content on your content.

Nice 👍

100% right! 👍🐝🍻

This definitely worth paying attention to! And we all need to be reminded about this! Thanks for sharing this with us, Zak!
