Growth on Hive and the Parallax Error
Hello everyone. Zak Ludick here from Cape Town South Africa and I am here again to speak to you about Hive and growing your account on Hive by blogging and being active!
One of the things that I have been doing on Hive for over two years now, is recording weekly growth stats manually. I did this as a start with myself only, then I added my partner and my kids and then people that I on boarded that I started calling my students on Hive.
Eventually this grew to the current 90 member strong Busy Bees group. We have some incredible busy bloggers in that group and they blog about anything and everything. From Crypto to Travel to Cooking to Gaming and many more topics.
In this time, I have seen people build and grow and for those that remain consistent, starting from tiny, small accounts, they grow and grow and grow. If you keep going, you SHALL go from Redfish to Minnow status.
For those that do not know, there are these levels on Hive based on Aquatic lifeforms – It starts at Redfish, which is anyone with less than 1 million VESTS of Stake on the Blockchain, ie – how much HP they have. Currently, you need around 585HP to have 1 million VESTS and then you are called a Minnow.
After that the levels go as 10x the previous.
So...
Less than 585HP – Redfish
More than 585HP – Minnow
More than 5,845HP(ish) – Dolphin
More than 58,450HP(ish) – Orca
More than 584,500HP(ish) – Whale
These are the levels on Hive. Whale is a recognizable name from MANY investment platform perspectives.
I was a Minnow many years back, but stopped blogging and powered down. I got back into Hive around 3 and a bit years ago I think and I got interested and excited. I went from Redfish back to Minnow and eventually, this year, I became a Dolphin! Currently I am around 116% of a Dolphin… or 11.6% of an Orca!
The crazy thing is that at my level of HP (currently 6,832HP at the time of writing), I am 1,838th strongest in HP in all of Hive! Which is insane if you think about it. One of my top Redfish is around 12,646th and they are around 100HP away from reaching Minnow. Minnows and up make up the top 10,856 Accounts on Hive. With hundreds of thousands of accounts smaller than that in the Redfish pile.
Anyway… all this talk of numbers is really just to give you some perspective and to show you that you MAY be looking at the numbers wrong!
The Parallax Error
Definition: “Parallax error is the error that occurs due to incorrect positioning of the eyes while taking a reading on a measuring scale. If the viewing angle is not perpendicular to the scale at the point where we are taking the reading, we will get less or more value of the measurement than the actual value.” https://byjus.com/question-answer/what-is-a-parallax-error-5/
And by this, I mean that often people are looking at their growth or their gains and then at the gains of the people that they look up to and want to emulate, which is usually someone with a larger amount of HP… and then after weeks or even months of trying to be like them, never seem to catch up…
Well… usually a role model is not someone who is one of your peers! It is usually a Dolphin or Orca Account while you are a Redfish or a Minnow. However, you are judging yourself poorly if you are comparing your growth in number to that of an Orca and being dissatisfied with your results.
Mathematically speaking, an entry level Dolphin has 10x the HP as the Entry level Minnow… therefore to be EQUAL, you actually have to consider that the Dolphin has to earn 10x the HP from blogging than the Minnow for the Dolphin to keep the lead.
Consider a Redfish earning 25HP a week, a Minnow earning 50HP a week and a Dolphin earning 100HP a week.
The Redfish starts at 0HP, the Minnow at 585HP and the Dolphin at 5850HP.
After 23 weeks, the Redfish has earned 25HPx 23 = 575HP and on the 24th week, 600HP and thus the Redfish is now a Minnow!
During that time the Minnow has gone up 1,200HP since the Minnow was gaining 50HP a week, double that of the Redfish! But the total HP is now 1,785HP which is a Minnow and the Redfish is at 600HP, also a Minnow. The Minnow is now a 300% Minnow or 30% of a Dolphin!
Meanwhile, the Dolphin gained twice what the Minnow did and four times what the Redfish did. 2,400HP for a total of 8,250HP… a 141% Dolphin or 14% of an Orca.
So you see, should these numbers continue, it is likely that all three accounts will become Dolphins before the Dolphin in the beginning continues to earn 4x that of the first account and 2x that of the 2nd. To be precise… it would take another 502 weeks for the Dolphin to become an Orca. In that time, the Redfish account sits on 13,150HP – A Dolphin! The Minnow account would be on 26,885HP, indeed a Dolphin and 45% of an Orca at that.
What is also true is that by the time that Redfish does become a Minnow and those two Minnows do become Dolphins that they would not be earning a quarter and a half of the other account’s HP. These numbers are all also subject to massive amounts of change based on the user’s activity, writing niche and popularity.
But the important take-away from this article is not to judge your progress against someone twice to ten times your size and feel as though you have failed! If they are 10 times your size then their weekly gain must be 10 times yours. It probably isn’t.
Instead of measuring yourself against others ahead of you, measure yourself against your own progress and maybe a few peers. That is why the Busy Bees works.
Healthy competition is meant to give yourself something to measure yourself against and to keep going without pause!
If you keep blogging consistently, engage with people daily and try to engage with new people all the time as well, then you will see that whatever you earn each month, doing the same actions today, will be different from what you earn after doing that for a year!
So… go on! Keep on blogging and stay encouraged to do your best on the blockchain, no matter what you blog about!
Thank you for reading!
Cheers!
