Monday Drum Day: Brushing up on jazz

in #hive-1503422 months ago

I am around 3 years into my drumming journey. Luckily I have some friends who are willing to play with me. We have a band @theriverkicks who play a mix of old folk tunes and some more modern songs, but some of us are trying something else now with some jazz tunes. We have played jazz before, but then I was playing guitar and drums is a different matter. For a starter I had not played with brushes before. These are used when you want a less percussive sound. I looked up some lessons on Drumeo to get me started. I have done a little swing drumming, but am still getting the feel of it. Drumeo actually have a jazz course starting very soon, so I shall be doing that.

This band had their first session at the weekend. We were back at London Road Studios that we have used a few times. They supply a drum kit minus a few bits I had to bring along, so I could travel light. Also in the band are @daniellemurray on clarinet and saxophone, @purplesinger on piano and vocals plus Bob on flute and vocals. We were missing bassist Paul this time.

We worked through a few tunes that all had a swing feel and I am really winging it on the drums. In some of the tunes I was trading solos with the others, but I need to work a lot more on that aspect. I have just included some clips of me on brushes and sticks as we need to figure out what we are doing and these tunes are nowhere near ready for full performance. I have to say that the others are doing really well with their solos. I have seen them develop over the years we have played together. With that experience we can usually pick up tunes fairly quickly.

I was going to use 3speak for the video, but their site is playing up. I may submit it to Drumeo to get some feedback from the instructors on what I should work on. I still have not had any in-person drum lessons and I need that feedback on my progress. Of course I welcome any tips from the drummers of Hive.

Play it cool man!

Well done buddy.. I love your zeal.
I once tried learning drumming back when I was a teenager but I guess it wasn't part of me or probably I didn't give it much time it required. I gave up, then moved into some other stuff.

I wish I'd tried it when I was young, but I'm having fun now anyway.

I love brushes in jazz tunes. It's such a classic sound. Very nice!

I'm finding that getting a good sound is not easy, but then I've only just started.

You will get there eventually as you get more comfortable with it.

I thought we sounded pretty good considering we haven't practiced those songs together before.

Honestly, your drumming is fab!! I can't believe how good you've become. I know some people think it looks easy but I know it isn't. Well done Steve.

It's something I wanted to try and I'm glad I've some aptitude for it. There's so much to learn though. I have to focus on what I can use and this jazz stuff will be a start.

Oh, I like easy stuff at jazz :)

I'm doing the easy stuff, but I want to go deeper. The others are more experienced on their instruments.

I used to practice every day for 10 years (also went on some drumming schools) so just do it :)

Awesome groove man! It is always fun trying new styles :)

Cheers. It's fun.

I've always wanted to be a drummer but things came up but in the future I'll make time for that. Couldn't watch the video I think it's my network though.

I wanted to try it for years and eventually got around to it. It's never too late to start, but do whatever is fun for you.

For now am working on development and projects on hives.

Well that's good too. Time is precious.

You can visit our blog and give us honest opinions and also support. We're having a project

Sounds fantastic guys!

Cheers!

I recently discovered that when our dog is feeling uneasy that youngest son plays jazz for her to listen to. For some reason the mixed beats and flow disrupts whatever is causing her unease. She calms down and then drifts off to sleep.

I was in the room when he did this recently and what I found for myself was that it was difficult to concentrate on what I was reading. My mind was distracted by the jazz music. So I can surmise that perhaps that is what happens to our sweet pup.

Interesting. Music can be powerful. I've heard of farmers playing it to their animals.

I've heard about farmers playing classical music to their crops to increase yields.

There's still so much we don't know about the connected layers of our world.
