The effects of the Ukraine - Russia conflict on my country

in #hive-1510703 years ago

It's been a while since I wrote something meaningful (and by meaningful I mean something that is more than 500 words long), and I got an interesting request by @flemingfarm : I'm curious how much the war is affecting you and your country so far. You are not far off from the action... Not like the many thousands of miles/kilometers away I am.

So here I am, about to tell you guys, dear and lovely people of Ecency what is happening in my country in the past 10 days or so.

275073793_709438456722423_7772062695808133343_n.jpg

For starters, as a lot of you already know, I was not in Belgrade when the war broke out. I was in Istanbul, so naturally, a war in Ukraine came as a bit of a shock to me. My first feeling was that this was a conflict that was to last shortly, approximately 3-5 days, as in essence, I truly believed the Ukrainians and Russians to be very similar to eachother - so a conflict between basically the same people should be a ludicrous affair. Right?

Well... wrong. And it is not the first time Europe has seen it.

Throback to the 90ties when my country was in a very similar position as to Russia is today: Serbia invaded Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina under the guidance of mr. Milosevic, who wanted to create an ethnically pure regions where Serbs could live happily ever after. I was not around when those things happened mind you, I was only a baby, so I couldn't tell you what was going on - but I can tell you that Serbia can feel the consequences of that war even today, 20 or so years after the conflict.

What is truly remarkable this time around though, that it is not only Russia and Ukraine that seem to be involved in this war. Everyone in Europe is - and everyone in Europe is already feeling the consequences of the conflict.

For starters, the prices of oil and electricity went up in a remarkably short period of time - which already let to widespread panic here in Serbia three days ago. People caused mass hysteria and plunged into the petrol stations trying to stock up on oil as much as possible. In the supermarkets the scenes were not that much different in comparison to March 2020, when the COVID-19 outbreak was confirmed as a worldwide pandemic - the supermarket shelves were emptied fairly quickly as people did not know what kind of lockdown the governments would implement, so they stocked up on the basic needs such as flour, cooking oil, toilet paper.

Things are not good, and the president of Serbia, mr. Vucic, addressed the people in a very dramatic TV apperance saying that ''the worse is yet to come'' - in relation to the many different price increases of some basic needs that the people of Serbia will be exposed to.

And all of this is really, really strange and worrying to say the least. Inflation, prices going up, economic turmoil - all of these are causes for great concern for every normal individual living not only in Belgrade, but in Europe as well. What is the end game plan or how do things go back to the way they were?

My own opinion is that.. they don't. It is too late now. The crisis has escalated to such a point that I don't believe mr. Putin to back off now. He has already commited too much, which means that there is no way that Russia will stop until they achieve their goal of 'demilitarazing Ukraine'.

As for Europe and the USA, all of those sanctions that they were hitting Russia with? Yeah, they havent worked in a way in which they anticipated - Russia is bleeding economically, but so is Europe. So is every normal working individual.

And what is the most worrying aspect of it all? The leading people of the EU nations claiming that indeed, the worse is yet to come from this war, economically speaking. If that is indeed true, then may God help us all - as already now the future is looking bleak for a lot of people. Huge price increases will drive a lot of families to poverty, will destroy countries economic status for years to come and it can arguably cause the crypto market to crash as well.

Tough days ahead of us. Only thing we could do is stick together. As mr. Albus Dumbledore once said:

Thank you for the reply. Wow, it sounds like much of Europe is on edge right now, for good reason. I'd guess that a lot of gasoline in Europe comes from Russia and with the embargoes now supplies will be pretty thin. It's pretty screwed up how the sanctions are messing with all of the countries now and not just the one they are meant to harm.

Unfortunately the worst is probably still to come economically especially the longer the war drags on.

Lets just say that the situation is not good at all - and unfortunately, it will only get worse as time passes..

Sadly that is how it looks even from afar. Prices on everything are rocketing up now and is likely to make for a pretty thin year for many people.

Out of curiosity, I'm seeing huge numbers for refugees streaming into neighboring countries, has yours taken many in? Romania buffers you but still...

not yet - but I think that it is inevitable that we will have a number of people coming in. which is not a bad thing, but still - just worth noting :)

The war is the hottest topic on the internet and I also pray that other countries can intervene so Russia can stop it madness

I totally understand this situation, cause my country, Iran was in this situation for 40 years under heavy sanctions and always it is people who goes under pressure of economic issues or war effects. But politicians and governments wont feel anything.

a lot of right words... peace to us all

This is really sad to hear and to see things happening this way without putting the masses in consideration. How do they cope if things continue to go up in prices? How will the country be at peace when the worse is yet to come as said?

This has gone beyond repair as you have said and I think it's not too late though to do the needful. In fact, in my country Nigeria, we already started experiencing fuel scarcity and items being inflated. May God help us all.

indeed! only thing we can do is hope for the best.

Very interesting and informative post.

Its great to get first hand accounts and I didn't know that consumers were already bing affected so much by price rises.

I've been writing since the start that sanctions can't work against a large country like Russia that supplies so much of the world's essential commodities.

Sanctions hurt both sides according to the benefit they got from the trade in the first place. I think Europe (which produces value added manufactured goods from Russia's commodities) benefited more from the original trade and thus will suffer MORE from sanctions than Russia.

Russia will only be stopped by effective military deterrence.

That is the main problem though - consumers are affected already so much and only 1 week has passed.
What is yet to come? What will be the main talking point 1 or 2 months from now?
The situation really is dramatic, not only conflict-wise, but also economically-wise as well.

And it better be "SWIFT"!

Thank you for publishing this post in response to the comment. While I knew that oil prices were affecting everyone everywhere, I thought the supplies situation was better in Europe because of geography: less distance from China and with only land in between instead of a wide ocean.

Inflation is everywhere these days, it seems, partly due to the oil shortage since increased costs affect even the extractors and those costs are passed along every step of the way from them to us as consumers.

As for what is happening in Ukraine, it is a tragedy for everyone there, no doubt about that. However, there are things we need to know which never get reported in the media, and those things present a picture of the situation which is different from what we are being told by "the media" no matter where we live. It feels more like propaganda than just-the-facts news, and it's happening everywhere. It's been that way for a long time, but this time they aren't even pretending to be objective about presenting "the news" to the people. Certain actions are known to grow this war from 2 countries to over two dozen, yet come people continue to insist of those very actions; why? Ukraine is screwed no matter what happens, and Russia doesn't come away without damage even if victorious or "mission accomplished"; so why get many more nations involved? Something else is happening, but we won't know what that is until it is to late for us. I'm giving this situation (war? conflict? "special military operation?") more time before I can begin trying to figure out what is happening there.

No matter what happens in Ukraine, we are where we are and we live where we live. This means that we still need to live our lives as best as we can. It also means controlling those things within our control and not letting what we cannot control control us to the point where we go insane. We do the basics we need to protect ourselves, our loved ones, our inventories, and our wealth or funds.

Beyond that, we do what we can to be a blessing for the people around us. Even in these times we need to find happiness, whatever that means for each of us. It's enough that life is becoming harder each day; we shouldn't become miserable people because of that. We can worry a little, but we must find ways to be happy.

True! It is so sad that we only get to hear one side from the story - the massive ban on Russian news outlets is an astonishing crime by the Western World.

Not only are we hearing just one side about what's happening, but what we hear from that side borders on propaganda. All establishment outlets are reporting the same things in the same way using the same words. While there is a bit of truth in what is being reported, can we trust the establishment media after the lies we've been told about many things for the last several years? It's as if the establishment media is working to drive the people into a frenzy to support actions which will make a lousy situation terrifying. News doesn't do that, but propaganda does.

absolutely spot on!

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism
