Growing up in a family where my mom happened to be a caterer, I and my siblings were exposed to different kinds of food, snacks as well as drinks. I wasn’t limited to tasting just my state food but other food because she made different kinds of food and snacks for people and her family as well. Turns out my mom is very picky. No matter how well she makes different food and snacks for people, she rarely eats.
I got to know about coffee even as a kid all thanks to my mom. She would always have a cup of coffee alongside some snacks whenever she was hungry. To her that was her favorite meal. She would choose coffee over tea at every opportunity she had. We had different brands of coffee at home and sometimes I wondered why she made coffee for herself and made tea for us.
On a particular day, when she was out and we were to make tea for ourselves, I made coffee, I didn’t know how she made it, so I just put it into the water without sugar and when I tasted it, I realized it was so bitter that I had to pour it away. When my mom returned my older sister made sure that she told my mom about what I did. I got disciplined and my mom told me I wasn’t up to the age of taking coffee. She said when I am older then I could decide to take coffee or tea.
To my mom taking coffee was more like a regular thing as most times she would take it because she needed to work at night while sometimes she would take it just like a regular beverage with some snacks and her friends around. Sometimes I wish I could grow up fast to also take my coffee while having a chitchat with my friends but turns out I love taking my coffee alone.
When it comes to my dad, he will always tell you that he is not a big fan of coffee. Even as a child, I noticed that my dad only took coffee occasionally. He would take it when he had loads of work or an exam for which he was preparing. As a kid, I would remember seeing my dad take coffee just because he wanted to stay awake on a particular night and needed something to help with that. To him, he was an occasional coffee drinker. To my mom, it was a regular thing.
My parents only frowned at us taking coffee because we were kids at that time and they said coffee wasn’t good for kids, but it wasn’t forbidden in my house as my mom always made sure she had a refill of her coffee whenever she was out. One time an uncle of mine returned from another country and I could remember that one gift he gave to my mom was a bag of coffee.
I could say that growing up, coffee taking was a big part of my mom’s life as she was a coffee lover. So it has always been accepted in my family, but we weren’t given coffee as kids since my parents said we didn’t need it in our body system at that time. Right now, I don’t even take tea, either prefer having milk or having my coffee.
