Would you ride 36 kilometers to have a cup of coffee? I know, for a lot of people this might sound really crazy. But for me, who loves caffeine and bicycles, this is the kind of program that makes me very happy.
For some time now I have wanted to visit the "Estrada dos Romeiros" or Pilgrims' Road, a historic route near my hometown here in Brazil. The way, which connects the cities of Itu and Barueri, was officially inaugurated in 1922, however, its history goes back to colonial Brazil.
Me on the beginning of the road
According to historians, the route was used by the Bandeirantes to reach the coast. Today, in addition to being a well-known spot among cyclists, the road is quite frequented by religious people who go to Pirapora do Bom Jesus, often to pay promises.
No cars, but some horses around
The Romeiros Road is considered a historical heritage site, besides being an area of environmental preservation. All along its route, you will find campsites, restaurants, candy stores, and places that sell typical food and drinks.
The road goes around the Tietê River, one of the most polluted rivers in Brazil. Although it is a beautiful road, it is impossible not to be heartbroken when seeing the foam that is formed due to the pollution.
The white stuff is basically foam from detergent pollution. Super sad
For cyclists, the road is very challenging, with numerous hairpin bends and climbs for physically fit people.
Roads like this makes me happy
One of the most visited points on the road by cyclists is the Empório Uai, which, in addition to coffee and typical sweets, serves the famous cheese bread, a delicacy much appreciated by Brazilians. There, besides the traditional one, you can find sweet and savory cheese bread. I myself tried the cream cheese and the dulce de leche which were delicious.
I don't know if there are many people who venture up and down hills with a bike just for a cup of coffee. But, I don't regret it and I recommend it. The combination of caffeine plus endorphin is perfect, especially if you're feeling a little down.
Many reasons to smile after some caffeine and some kilometers
See ya on the next coffee!!
