The she-wolf of the mall

On Saturday I had plans to visit the new coffee shop in town with Marcia, Andrea and Victoria for breakfast, everyone was commenting on the quality of the food and the variety available in coffee brands and their preparation.

I am a punctual person, so I always get to the site before anyone else. I requested a table for four and then ordered a mocaccino to start the morning. The locals were right, the coffee was delicious.

Until finally Andrea and Victoria arrived. At that point we called Marcia to find out how soon she would arrive. She told us that the car would not start due to battery failure and she was asking her boyfriend to help her.

We were all hungry and to make the wait more pleasant, we ordered coffee. This time I tried the house special with vanilla and the secret ingredient. Another delight.

We were all happy when Marcia walked through the door, luckily her boyfriend took her to the coffee shop so she wouldn't miss her date with us.

With the menu in hand the food and drink options were almost endless and all provocative. The presentation of the dishes was spectacular.

All the girls drank coffee, for me it was my third of the morning and on that occasion a Bombón coffee (with condensed milk) was the companion to my breakfast. When we finished our meals, we headed to the mall, as Victoria needed to buy some shoes for the company's anniversary party.

The heat was oppressive, almost 40 °C indicated all the cell phones. The humidity made my clothes stick to my body, while beads of sweat rolled down my skin.

"I can't stand this heat anymore! I shouted. I'm going for a cold coffee. Who's with me?"

"They all answered immediately. Me, me, me."

"Four extra large cold coffees please".

I said to the store clerk.

A few minutes passed and we sat down to enjoy the drink, when I was about to comment on how handsome the guy next to me looked, instead of speaking, a loud howl like a wounded wolf came out of my mouth. I immediately closed my mouth and they all stared at me without understanding my reaction.

I swallowed saliva thinking that maybe there was something wrong with my throat and tried to speak again. Oh my God, what's wrong? I thought, as the howl escaped my mouth for the second time.

My friends laughed at the same time as they did not understand my behavior. I grabbed my cell phone and started texting so I could communicate. I explained that I didn't know what was going on and that I was just trying to talk, I didn't mean to howl, oh and I also told them to take the opportunity to see the boy next door who was really cute.

Between laughter and complicit glances, the girls turned to contemplate such a monument, when Victoria wanted to make a comment, she started barking like a dog.

Immediately, Andrea opened her mouth and we thought that a guacharaca had slipped in between us. It was inevitable not to draw attention to ourselves. We looked like a zoo in the middle of a shopping mall. It wasn't long before Marcia was the clucking mother hen.

The only way we could understand each other was by texting on our cell phones. We decided to leave the mall to stop being the clowns of the day.

The biggest surprise was, we weren't the only ones. Large crowds of people were making animal sounds in the street, confusion reigned in the place. I was relieved to know that we were not alone in this situation.

Immediately, police cars, ambulances and even fire trucks were deployed throughout the town, closing all the establishments that sold coffee. The order was for us to go home and wait for the authorities' statements.

We decided to continue as four friends together, so we went to my house. At a press conference they announced that a strange virus had recently been found in the coffee. Its side effects ranged from losing the voice to emitting animal sounds, to walking like animals, to the appearance of animal hair and feathers on the skin.

The call was to remain calm and wait for the health authorities to distribute the drug to reverse the effects.

Luckily it only affected our voices, we had no choice but to have fun assuming the behavior of the animal that had taken over our vocal cords.

Two days later, we received the medication and within an hour we had recovered our voice.

This is my entry for this week's Creative Writing Challenge.
