While I have been taking care of a friend's house and cat, I've been visiting the local canal and reservoir. Even though the weather has been gloomy, it's still good to get out and look at the local birdlife.
In addition to the resident swans, I discovered a variety of other birds during my walks.
I was pleased to catch a glimpse of a male goosander. It must have arrived overnight as I've been visiting every day. I don’t often see them here.
I also had the pleasure of spotting a couple of great crested grebes, which are known for their elaborate courtship displays. I stopped and watched them for a while before carrying on.
The tufted ducks also caught my eye, with their striking black and white plumage and the little tuft on their heads.
Lastly, I noticed the ever-present black-headed gulls bobbing about on the choppy water. Each visit offered a chance to see a range of bird species, to brighten up a dreary day.
