Life Will Always Find A Way?

in #hive-1528893 years ago

With spring well under way the grandkids decided to get their bikes out of the shed and look what they found built into one of their crash helmets!

A Birds Nest!

My first thoughts were that it would be nice to leave this post just like that.

Nice and pleasant but it wouldn't be honest or truthful. Nobody wants the truth right?

The ugly truth is that this is disastrous.
Look closely at the materials used to make the nest. Along with the usual twigs and leaves there is a load of plastic crap.

Plastic Trash!

20220403_141843.jpg

Bear in mind that I live on a farm 10 miles from the nearest village and 20 miles from the nearest town.

The question is. Where are the birds finding this trash?

I suspect from a recycling centre about 5 miles away?

No Eggs or Chicks

Who knows. Maybe the parent birds died from eating plastics?

When we see pollution like this on the TV that's one thing but when we find it in our own gardens it suddenly becomes a more immediate threat.

Mr.Beast Emailed Me and 100's of YouTubers

Mr.Beast is a YouTuber with 60+ million followers. He asked us to make a video about pollution.

It raised awareness about the importance of taking the initiative locally but thinking globally.

It worked and raised a lot of money for the support of many anti pollution projects.

Admittedly it just scratched the surface of the plastic pollution problem but it got the conversation going.

It can feel overwhelming on an individual level to think about the future of the world and what little we think we can do about it?

But there is always hope. As individuals we can change our purchasing behaviour and as some companies are realising it is a massively growing market that they can make products for.

Many firms have already chosen to change their business practices and switched to non plastic packaging.

These firms are thriving and cashing in on this largely untapped area of the economy.

Remember people make the economy by their purchasing decisions.

The economy responds to our choices.

So all things considered we can do a lot more than we think.

Firms want our money for their goods. So vote with your cash. 🤯👍

It is a shame but some states here dont even have a bottle deposit. Hence there is no incentive for the plastic bottles to be picked up and returned to be recycled.

Er! How about living on a cleaner planet? Isn't that an incentive?

We can make sustainable choices on what we buy.

We can't wait for governments to do anything except grab more taxes! 😂😂👍

I remember when I was a kid a bird made a nest in my dad's motorbike helmet that he had not used in a while. Not so much plastic crap everywhere back then. It's just in everything from the soil to the water. We should be much more worried about that as it will affect us as well as nature. We are poisoning the planet and that is as big an issue as the general air pollution. We need to take plastics out of the equation as much as possible. They are convenient, but there is a cost.

We need to take plastics out of the equation as much as possible.

I totally agree but we are up against a formidable opponent namely big oil.

As a species we survived without plastics for millennia. In the few short decades that we have had plastics we have done unprecedented damage to ourselves and the world.

They are convenient, but there is a cost.

The 'convenient' aspect of plastic I would argue is disproportionately and heavily biased to the producer's of goods rather than the general public.

If a firm can wrap ever smaller portions of a good they can maximise profits and call the wrapped good an 'added value' on an individualised basis.

It's also more convenient and cost effective for firms to use plastics because they have made it so.

I'm old enough to remember a time when there was virtually no plastics in food wrapping. Mostly everything was loose (fruit & veg) or wrapped in paper. (Meat & fish etc)

Voting with our cash sends a clear message to firms to sort themselves out. 👨‍💻👍

We use a local refill shop, but that may be more expensive than the supermarket. We have to show there is demand for alternatives. At least some supermarkets have got rid of disposable bags for loose fruit and veg. That's a start. Of course COVID has generated masses of extra plastic waste from the test kits. Have to hope that someone is thinking of how to improve on that for the future.

The refill thing is getting a lot of attention overall. We buy the concentrated washing machine detergent in tiny blocks that we dilute with water. (Cardboard packaging)

When we really look at our shopping critically it seems like an impossible task. Plastic is literally everywhere and in almost every product somewhere in its lifecycle.

We were getting there but we need more firms to see the opportunity.

Of course COVID has generated masses of extra plastic waste from the test kits.

Apparently there was also a massive increase in the use of plastic bags again!?

People have short memories about the environment when imminent death is around every corner.

🤦‍♂️🤯👍

Doesn't help when politicians dismiss concerns about environmental issues or try to push whatever their industry backers want. Efficiency could give major wins, but where's the profit in that?

Yep it's a bit like sitting on a tree branch and cutting the branch you're sitting on! Dumb but people do it every day.

Remember someone elected these clowns.

Cameron sold us down the river with that nuclear power plant deal and no one batted an eyelid? 🤯

And when did nuclear power become 'green?' It's not ok even if it never goes wrong!

The rampant mendacity of the current crop of Tories shocks even me and I'm not easily surprised by politicos.

Lies, damn lies and statistics plus a spin doctor! 🤦‍♂️👍

First I had to laugh about the surprise seeing a birds nest in the helmet
Nature always finds a place sbd way.
Humans plastic and trash behavior is so bad and makes me sad

Did you know about a great hive initiative in the CLEAN PLANET community? https://ecency.com/created/hive-150210 rewarding people for cleaning up their worlds.

Hi beeber, yes we must do more to help clean up the problem.
