“For bells are the voice of the church; they have tones that touch and search the hearts of young and old.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Bell Tower
At the beginning of this year, in the days prior to the 167th Visit of the image of the Divina Pastora (Divine Shepherdess) to the city of Barquisimeto, which took place on January 14 as has been traditional since 1856; I was touring the town of Santa Rosa and its basilica, home of this Marian devotion of Andalusian origin dating back to the 18th century.
The first records of this temple date back to 1640 when Capuchin monks from Spain erected the building that would later be destroyed by the earthquake of 1812 that affected the region and much of western Venezuela.
The current structure has a classic architectural style and has a bell tower to the left of its front facade, which I share in this pair of images I took that day.
