I've been meaning to write this post for a while. The main topic is to comment on a Kdrama that we found interesting at home.
Before continuing, it is very possible that the term used to classify these TV series is not well known to some, so let's clarify a bit. Dorama is a term that many streaming services have used interchangeably for dramatic productions for Asian television, with real actors, sometimes adapting dramas born in other genres (books, manga, anime, etc.) and other times developing original scripts.
The word Dorama (ドラマ) is of Japanese origin (and I think it is a phonetic adoption of the word Drama), but it is obviously not applicable to all Asian countries. Thus, in some specialized services, there has been a differentiation between three large production groups of dramas for television series. This classification is based on the fact that the three main countries that supply these series to the international platform are Japan, China and South Korea, hence they are designated respectively: Jdrama, Cdrama, and Kdrama.

And it can be said that they developed with greater momentum from 1980 onwards, with colour television technology already available, and the economic conditions in Korea being at a suitable level for there to be a market for this product. It is fine for a local or regional story, but it did not stop there and they became international with the “Korean Wave” phenomenon of the 1990s.
Nowadays, our precious 21st century, a good number of streaming platforms for films and series, from different parts of the world, have given relevance to these productions and it has become a very international market. That explains how I can watch Asian drama productions on my continent, while the same services promote series from other continents as well. And it is a significant source of income for the economy of its country of origin, in fact, a couple of years ago the sales of kdramas represented more than 500 million dollars for South Korea, it was about US$ 561.3 million (to be a little more precise).
Nowadays, our precious 21st century, a good number of streaming platforms for films and series, from different parts of the world, have given relevance to these productions and it has become a very international market. That explains how I can watch Asian drama productions on my continent, while the same services promote series from other continents as well. And it is a significant source of income for the economy of its country of origin, in fact, a couple of years ago the sales of kdramas represented more than 500 million dollars for South Korea, it was about US$ 561.3 million (to be a little more precise).

Enough introductory explanations. Let's get back to the topic of the kdrama I wanted to comment on.
It's one called “Marry My Husband” (내 남편과 결혼해줘), a Korean series broadcast by the TVN channel at the beginning of 2024 (January 1 - February 20, 2024). Its script is based on a webtoon that was published between 2020 and 2021, with quite a lot of popularity in the romantic story consumption segment. By the way, there are differences between the electronic comic publishing format (webtoon) and the Manhwa format, but that's a discussion that would take us some time to explain.
The webtoon had the same name as the TV #series it inspired. And in fact, both adaptations were based on a #webnovel by Seong So-jak. It caught my attention that the author of the novel was also in charge of the webtoon version. For the #TV version, the script adaptation was by Shin Yoo-dam, and the direction by Park Won-kook. But let's not go into the technical details and go to the comments I wanted to share.

In the story, we are introduced to a woman who is terminally ill with cancer. She is married to an indolent man, she is an orphan of a father, a man who raised her after they were abandoned by her mother. She has no other relatives, and with her marriage she also 'won' a domineering mother-in-law, a contemptuous, sexist, patriarchal, and terribly selfish woman.
As if the bad things already weren't enough. The protagonist finds that she has trouble even paying the medical bills. Her husband is out of work, living like a resentful parasite, after placing all the burdens on her, and seeing the stock investments he had made fail. The mother-in-law doesn't help, with her insulting treatment and her continuous verbal and psychological aggression against the protagonist, as if 'allowing her beloved son to marry that orphan' was something that placed her above everything else.
This is already a terrible home life, one of the kind that makes you question whether you should consider a quick divorce. But, things can always get worse. The protagonist, in the first chapter, comes home to discover that her best friend (of years) is her husband's lover. They are having intimacy in HER bed (hers!), while discussing how they are going to enjoy the life insurance money that the husband took out in the name of his dying wife.

All of this infuriates the protagonist, and she confronts them. But these characters are quite detestable, and the actors in charge give us a performance that achieves the goal of making us hate them well. In the discussion, things come to pushing and physical attacks, ending with the death of the protagonist at the hands of the adulterous couple. Meanwhile, the protagonist, in her final seconds, hears how they are planning to prepare the scene so that the murder is taken as an accidental death.
I know, when one reads this, one surely does not want that ending. And the author played with that very thing, using the idea (common in several Asian web novels) of regression, to show that the protagonist wakes up in her body, but ten years before her death. She is not married yet, she is still working at the company, she is not sick, and she has a chance to change everything.
That might seem simple, but it seems that the flow of events insists on going in one direction and does not like to change plans. It is as if there is an invisible hand or a 'world spirit' that, like a demiurge (or Fatum), insists that things develop in a predetermined way. So, trying to simply escape it does not work.
I know, when one reads this, one surely does not want that ending. And the author played with that very thing, using the idea (common in several Asian web novels) of regression, to show that the protagonist wakes up in her body, but ten years before her death. She is not married yet, she is still working at the company, she is not sick, and she has a chance to change everything.
That might seem simple, but it seems that the flow of events insists on going in one direction and does not like to change plans. It is as if there is an invisible hand or a 'world spirit' that, like a demiurge (or Fatum), insists that things develop in a predetermined way. So, trying to simply escape it does not work.
Demiurge writing the book of the destiny of mortals, directing everything to the destiny he wishes to give them, with no option to deny the fate.

The series has 16 episodes, and I think it's well worth the watch. In my particular case, I'm not a fan of web dramas, but this plot caught my attention a bit after watching it with my brother. It was later that I found out that it was based on a web novel, and the things I saw in the series' plot seemed more familiar to me. The idea of regression, the idea of revenge to settle scores (what is usually called 'giving refreshing slaps'), and some supernatural events that one must learn to handle in order to escape from 'fate', all of these things are elements that I have read in several Asian web novels.
So I can say that it is a series that can be enjoyed, and the acting is quite good. It makes me think a bit about some social problems that South Korean society faces today, and it doesn't mention them directly, but it shows enough to make you wonder about those issues.

En la historia, se nos presenta una mujer que está en etapa terminal de cáncer. Está casada con un hombre indolente, ella es huérfana de padre, un hombre que la crio luego de que fueron abandonados por su madre. No tiene más familiares, y con su matrimonio se ‘gano’ también a una dominante suegra, una mujer despectiva, machista, patriarcal, y terriblemente egoísta.
Como si no bastaran las cosas malas que ya había. La protagonista encuentra que tiene problemas hasta para pagar las facturas médicas. Su esposo está sin trabajo, viviendo como un parásito resentido, luego de cargar en ella todas las cargas, y ver fracasar las inversiones en acciones que él había hecho. La suegra no ayuda, con su trato insultante y su continua agresión verbal y sicológica contra la protagonista, como si ‘permitir que su hijo amado se casara con esa huérfana’ fuera una cosa que la colocaba por encima de todo lo demás.
Ya con esto se te va presentando una vida familiar terrible, una del tipo que te hace cuestionar si debería considerar el divorcio por vía rápida. Pero, las cosas siempre pueden ir a peor. La protagonista, en el primer capítulo, llega a casa para descubrir que su mejor amiga (de hace años) es la amante de su esposo. Están teniendo intimidad en SU cama, la de ella, mientras conversan como van a disfrutar del dinero del seguro de vida que el esposo tomó a nombre de su esposa moribunda.

Aún no se ha casado, sigue trabajando en la empresa, no está enferma, y tiene una oportunidad para cambiar todo.
Eso podría parecer sencillo, pero pareciera que el flujo de los eventos se empeña en ir en una dirección y no le gusta cambiar los planes. Es como si hubiera una mano invisible o un ‘espíritu del mundo’ que, a la manera de un demiurgo (o Fatum), se empeña a que las cosas se desarrollen de una manera predeterminada. La serie tiene 16 capítulos, y creo que vale bien la pena. En mi caso particular, no soy un seguidor de dramas novelados, pero esta trama me atrapó un tanto, luego de verla con mi hermano. Fue luego que me enteré de que estaba basada en una novela web, y las cosas que vi en la trama de la serie me parecieron más familiares. La idea de la regresión, la idea de la venganza para ajustar cuentas (lo que se suele llamar ‘dar cachetadas’), y algunos eventos sobrenaturales que hay que aprender a manejar para poder escapar del ‘destino’, todas estas cosas, son elementos que he leído en varias novelas asiáticas en formato web.
Así que puedo decir que es una serie que se puede disfrutar, y las actuaciones lo hacen bastante bien. Me llevan a pensar un poco en algunos problemas sociales que enfrenta la sociedad de Corea del Sur en la actualidad, y no los menciona directamente, pero muestra lo suficiente como para que te cuestiones sobre esos temas.
