I think almost everyone likes to eat something that has a good taste. No one likes to take anything bitter except there is a reason for it.
I don't think sugar is bad for us but some health challenges may cause one to cut down their intake of sugar or to totally avoid it.
The saying, "too much of everything is bad" comes to play here because no matter how healthy you are, you must take sugar in moderation to prevent any health implications.
Too much of sugar is not good for us and we must take it with caution because we don't want to put ourselves at risk of diabetes and the likes of other illnesses that usually accompany it.
It's really hard to avoid sugar as much as I want to because the end product of most of the food we eat like rice, cassava, yam, and others are glucose and someone like myself can't do without all these foods. So, the first thing I try to do is to first get it into my mind that sugar is bad for my health and I try to build and discipline myself against it.
I try as much as possible to do without the direct sugar going into my system like the carbonated drinks, and white sugar.
How do I do these? I challenge myself to the no soda challenge. My friends make jest of me all the time when I talk about it. But it has helped me so much. I avoid all carbonated drinks including malt. During the challenge which is usually about one month, I just look away whenever I'm tempted to take it and I've been disciplined with it.
Another thing I try to avoid is putting sugar in my chocolate drink which we call tea. I also stopped taking garri totally just to avoid the temptation to add sugar to it.
The most difficult for me at the beginning was avoiding pastries. These are part of the things to avoid but when I see cake, I usually let my guard down. I really love eating cake and doughnuts which I know are filled with a lot of sugar that I'm trying to avoid. With time, I also started avoiding them and in the month of July, I didn't eat any cake.
I use honey or date syrup in my pap when I want that sweet taste but I still try to avoid it all together because some of the honey we buy in the market are not pure honey. I don't care about drinks anymore with or without sugar. The most important is water
These are some of the things I do to reduce my intake of sugar. I can't totally avoid it because my body still needs a certain amount of glucose to function properly. I faced some challenges in the areas of cravings and others but I've been able to discipline myself just to live healthy.
