On my way for a seminar this morning, I was left shocked by the traffic jam at the high way as early as 7:00 o'clock in the morning. The traffic was on a standstill as everyone wanted to move at the same time while the cars in front have not yet moved. The road was blocked and few minutes later, the cars in front started moving little by little but not long after that there was another standstill. This happened and almost made me late for the program I was going for.
I began to wonder how come there are so many cars on the narrow road. Some families have four to five cars. The father will take one to work while the mother would also take one, the driver will drive the children to school with another one and the maid will go to the market with one and there may be extra cars packed in the house just for fun.
Here in Africa, cars are used like the show of wealth. The number of cars parked in your compound shows how wealthy you are. I know of a man in my former street who has about ten cars. The cars are just kept there and not even used. They my warm the cars sometimes and sometimes they are just left there. What are the cars used for? There is no answer to that question.
I have come to realize that it seems that our roads are not even ready for all these. The roads are really tiny and not made for the numbers of cars that plyes it every day. That is the reason it gets congested every time during the morning rush and the evenings after closing time.
If a rule is given that every family can only own one car, this would be a very welcome idea for me I would love for such a rule to be implemented because it will reduce all these nonsense on the road first of all, and secondly, I know it will make life easier for people like me when it comes to using the road and this will also make the tiled road last longer. The public transport channel can take care of others.
the amount of carbon emissions that pollute the air on a daily basis is another issue that is being ignored most times when discussing this issue because some people usually overlook it. It is a very serious issue that has been linked to many health challenges related to the lungs and no one talks about it.
I feel if the number of cars owned by each family is reduced to one, this will reduce the amount of carbon emissions that pollute the air on a daily basis. The pollution will be reduced and the roads will also be free for users to move without traffic jam.
