Hello everyone, how are you doing today? I hope Mother Nature is treating you fine?
It has been quite a while since I made a post on a holiday, and I have chosen to talk about another holiday today. It is not much of a holiday really; it is more like an observance. It is something we can do no matter where we are or what we are doing; it can be done at home, at work, or in school without much effort from us. And the reward is always glorious. It is nothing other than the Random Act of Kindness Day.
This is a good opportunity to be a good person, and by this, I mean being good beyond what even you used to be. And this kindness would not be towards your family members, instead, you will show them to strangers or people who would never expect such a gesture from you.
The observance of this day was first initiated in the year 1995 in Denver, Colorado by a non-profit organization called the Random Act of Kindness Foundation. The day now became so popular that it began to spread even beyond the borders of The United States. Nine years later, in the year 2004, the day was also observed in New Zealand. And from then on, it became more and more widespread.
Through the pages of history, we have seen heroes and heroines that have given a lot just for the sake of kindness. We have seen people go the extra mile so that other people can have a smile on their faces. We have read about people like Mother Theresa, Princess Diana, the Dalai Lama, these are people who dedicated their life for the betterment of the people around them.
Now, I am not saying you have to give up your life and take on one of servitude in the name of kindness, even though I do believe that kind of life would surely have its reward. What I am saying instead is that when we go about our duties and concerns, when we go about our daily lives, in the workplace, in our schools or places of worship, in the marketplace, these are all places where you can show a little kindness.
It can be by giving a beggar some money or helping an elderly cross the busy road, it could also be helping your junior colleagues at work through some difficult task just so that they do not get a bad record at the company. There are a million ways we can show kindness, and there is no limit to just how good we can be.
And one thing about this day is that we do not expect the kindness we show to be reciprocated. Your acts might not be appreciated at all, it might even be rebuffed, or you might get scorned and mocked by your peers because of the path you have chosen. But you know your reason for being the person you are and you and not meant to let such things sway you from your path.
So, on a day like this, as we go out to conquer the world, promise yourself to show at least one person some act of kindness. It could be anyone at all, and it could be for anything. You just have to be kind to at least one person. Then when you get to see the way your act has brightened up their day and made them smile, you will realize just how good that makes you feel. And you will find out you want to be feeling that way more and more.
And if everyone in the world should choose to show an act of kindness to at least one person every day, the world would be a much better place to live in. but until that happy day, we just have to try the little we can and leave the rest.
