Sometimes, I can’t help but wonder why some people seem to detest communal progress. They only enjoy it when they’re doing it and when their plans are being followed to ensure that they get to take all the glory attached to the success of the project. These are the kind of people who don’t mind being the only smart person in the group, they want to be the only one doing all the critical thinking so when the time to give accolades comes, they’ll share it with no one.
You can imagine a team where someone wouldn’t want to ever support everyone else’s opinion. As far as it’s not theirs, then the opinion doesn’t make sense and it won’t work. If the team chooses to go with someone else, it could end up making such people leave the team entirely, or even if they stay they will not be involved in the work. Hell, they could even frustrate everyone. That’s how annoying they can be.
There are people who are sneaky about this character of theirs, they know it’s not a good one so they try to hide their dislike when people don’t go with their ideas. However, there are those who don’t bother with hiding. They simply just think they’re the most intelligent and anyone who thinks otherwise is foolish. This is the kind of character many of us have to deal with on a daily basis.
Here where I live, the lodge was about to elect a new Lodge President, and it’s an event that’s compulsory for everyone to attend so that you’ll get to have a say in who manages the lodge and will also get to be the mouthpiece of the entire occupants when it comes to liaising with the landlord and the caretaker. So, choosing a president is usually a big deal.
However, in this particular election, a little problem came up; the voting style. For some reason, this guy wanted us to do it online in the Whatsapp Group chat by reacting to the individual names of the nominees. The name with the most reactions would win the vote. However, no one else saw the wisdom in that. We were not up to twenty, with a simple show of hands we could easily count the votes and be done with it. Doing it online would only complicate matters and make things longer than necessary.
Bro was like this is 2024, no one votes with a show of hands anymore, but then, if the modern way of voting is more stressful than the old way, why would we want to switch? Besides, people could vote for multiple candidates and not everyone has a smartphone just as not everyone will have data at that moment. There are just so many things about the situation that could make it more stressful for the electoral team.
Yet, this guy didn’t care. He got angry when he saw that out of twenty people, not even one person supported his claim. He didn’t leave though, although that would have been better if he did. He became so annoying and frustrated, making calls during the meeting and arguing with everyone beside him. We all could see that he was still pissed about us not liking his idea.
When it got too much, we had to ask him to leave the meeting. At first, he tried to act stubborn, but most of the guys in the lodge were ready to forcefully eject him from the meeting before he jejely went on his own two feet, he still didn’t want to lose what was left of his steeze. Without him, we still held the election with a show of hands and it went smoothly.
Gone are the days when we’d be ready to put an entire project on hold simply because of one person’s ego. It doesn’t make sense that in a teamwork, you’d think that yours is the only idea that matters. That’s such a crazy ideology to live with. Such people are never apologetic when their ideas fail, they’ll just keep quiet. However, they’ll be the ones to trumpet it when the other idea fails, they’ll remind everyone who cares to listen that they had been against it right from the start and they knew it was doomed to fail.
These are the kind of people that need to be gone from our lives as 2024 is coming to a close. I can’t be buddying with someone who doesn’t value my opinion, yet expects me to always take theirs seriously. We’ll always be fighting, and I don’t have the strength for that kind of thing. So, let’s just stay on our own. Life is already hard enough as it is, I don’t need anyone making it worse for me.
