I don’t know about other movie lovers, but I’ve found out that horror films of these recent times are not nearly as scary as they used to be in the past. And when I say this, I also take into account the jump scares, the effects, and the ability to keep you on the edge of your seat. These days, what we get are mostly slasher films that have loads of action and lots of blood. However, that fear, that terror that these movies put in your hearts, we don’t seem to find them anymore.
What do we get instead? We get movies that are not really scary. Sometimes the writers take time to develop the scary and it’s only towards the ending that the scares actually begin. Many horror movies today are predictable and that’s the thing; it’s never supposed to be. The beauty of a horror movie is that no one is safe, not even the main protagonist. Every one is liable to collect.
Horror movies from the 1980s are just pure gems, in the fact that they can really scare you. Be it slasher films or the usual demonic possession and the like. These movies go a long way to put you in a state of terror. We have movies like Halloween that really hooked us. Of course, this movie came out before my time, but I’ve seen it all and it’s just been insane.
However, in the 1990s, we still got more scary slasher films like Scream. It was scary, and the fact that it was a slasher film didn’t get rid of that element. Somehow they were able to still include some bit of humor as well. The 2000s for me though, has one of the best entries when it comes to the horror genre. We have Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Final Destination, Wrong Turn…. And so many more. The 2010s came along, but we were mostly getting remakes and sequels and prequels.
For me, I think the last scary movie I watched was IT, based on the Stephen King novel. To date, I’ve not seen something that tops it. I’ve seen countless number of horror movies, but I’ve just not seen one that beats that particular one. On a second note, I could add Evil Dead Rising as a pretty good one as well, but besides that, there really isn’t anyone else. And from what I can guess, the focus is not being placed anymore on what makes the movie scary. But somehow, that’s even more confusing because if the focus is not on what makes it scary, what then is the focus on? What makes it romantic????
But this is what we have to deal with. Even the movies about possession and the like don’t really do it for me anymore. I don’t really know why. Maybe it’s just Hollywood, maybe it’s time for me to explore the genre across other countries as well. I saw a Spanish horror flick that was quite scary once, maybe I’ll try giving another one a chance.
So, I’m just saying. I’m a huge fan of horror movies and I’ve developed a tolerance for it to the point where they don’t move me anymore. And I’m not happy about it. I need them more scary, with more jump scares and with more ability to turn my stomach. I’m sure it’ll be so much fun.
