So, is there a day I would love to go back to? Or is there something in the past that I would love to change regardless of whatever the consequences may be? When I think about it, there are quite a number of things I would love to change. Personally, I’ve not really done a lot of things in my life that would make me want to turn back the hands of time. Suffice it to say, right now I’m actually living life with zero regrets. Thank God.
However, the same can’t be said for my dear country. There are so many things about us that I would love to change. So many decisions that were made by people in power that in one way or the other, brought us to this present hardship that we’re currently facing.
For as long as I’ve lived, people have always been complaining about the affairs of the country, things have always been hard, and surviving has always been a herculean task. Even when the dollar was less than N100, however, it has only gotten worse over the decades. Systematically and with utmost patience, the country has been getting worse. However, in these past years, the rate at which it has gotten worse has increased exponentially, making the previous years look like fond and blissful memories.
But then, what can we do? There are no two ways about it. Things are bad, and to survive one has to keep working extra hard. We work and work until we have no more breath in our lungs. That’s just how bad things are right now. So, if I have the chance to go back in time and change things for my country, will I take it? Hell yeah! I’m definitely taking the chance!
So, what will it be? A lot of the things that are happening to us today are blamed on bad governance, so I guess I could try and change that. I could go back to 2015 when former President Goodluck Jonathan was voted out of office and try to make sure that he won. Maybe then former President Buhari wouldn’t have had the field day he had with us for eight years that led to President Tinubu taking over in 2023. Who knows?
Or maybe I could go further back in time and make sure that Former President Yar’adua’s illness was diagnosed earlier and through some divine intervention, he didn’t die an untimely death. So he went on to serve his term fully and even got elected a second time because Nigerians truly love him. Who knows, he would have made this country a whole lot better with all the goodies he had planned for us.
Or I could travel even further back to June 12 1993 and try my possible best to make sure that MKO Abiola was declared as the true president after winning the election. I would make sure that Ibrahim Babangida stepped down and Abiola took the presidential seat. There was a reason everyone voted for MKO and I’m sure that reason wasn’t misplaced. I’m pretty certain that if he had become the president as he was supposed to, that would have set a precedent and model for the elections that came thereafter.
Sadly, every other thing that has happened since then is just fruit of the same poisonous tree. Elections are filled with rigging and vote buying. Nothing is sacred anymore and with every election cycle that comes and goes, the people lose more faith in the system. Wizkid FC and 30BG fans be arguing and fighting each other everyday, you’d never for once see them mention tribe. You won’t hear any mention of tribes when they’re arguing about G.O.A.T status between Ronaldo and Messi. However, once it comes to who will lead our country, everyone suddenly remembers to segregate themselves into tribes and religion. And that’s why we’re still where we are today. Suffering, while the people who keep driving us apart are enjoying life.
So, if I have the power to go back in time and make a change, it would be to make sure that MKO will become the President as he was supposed to. I don’t know how badly it will affect things. It might turn out to be a major error on my part, or it might end up being the best thing to do. Either way, considering who he was and how much everyone loved him, I believe that it’s a risk worth taking.
Too bad all this is wishful thinking. I would have really loved to go back in time. But then, never say never. We live in a world where anything is possible. Who knows, someone could have done it already but we don’t even know. Hehe… I guess only time will tell.
