While I’m not the kind of person that would appreciate landlords having unhealthy interest in the affairs of their tenants, I’ve come to the realization that in some scenarios, the landlords really need to buckle up and stop themselves from allowing some certain individuals into their houses. No matter the amount of money that such tenants might end up paying because in the long run, we end up losing way more.
Now, if you’ve been following my blog, you’d see where I’ve complained about landlords in the past, especially the previous one I had that kicked everyone out of his house just because he wanted to increase the rent and didn’t want any of us to stay over. I’ve seen my own shege, but then, there are times when other tenants would show you their own brand of shege that you’d wish your landlord would not be so accommodating to them.
What am I talking about? In the house across from mine, there’s this row of shops that serve as a sort of mini plaza. It’s a bubbling place because some major people opened up businesses there. There’s a foodseller there, a pharmacy, and even a shop there that sells drinks on wholesale and delivers to almost every dealer in the town.
However, all that is overshadowed by the one shop where they play games. Now, this shop has a snooker table where young guys come to play games. Inside, there are also Playstations where they can play their games. I don’t have anything against them, everyone can do what they have to do to earn a living. But then, the thing is, the majority of the customers to this game house are thugs and many of them belong to gangs and whatnot.
When playing games, they place bets. However, whoever loses the bet will always be a sore loser and refuse to accept his loss, and that’s how a fight will break out. Before you know it, every shop in that compound will be closed and the traders will be forced to rush home, the streets will be cleared out because no one wants to be outside when these guys are clashing.
This is what we face on a regular basis. At least every week we get to experience two fights, if not more. That’s how bad it is. These guys have become a thorn in the flesh of the residents because they’ve made the neighborhood unsafe and people can no longer walk about as freely as they used to. The council in charge of the area had to meet up with the owner of the mini-plaza and demanded to know why they would rent their shop to such customers.
To everyone’s shock, the man denied renting it out. He said that his wife rented the shop to the guys. Unfortunately, the wife was abroad at the moment and she couldn’t be bothered about what was going on down here. The council then demanded that they give the troublemakers quit notice because at this point, the problem they were causing was too much.
The fights, the unrest… while no one had been hurt just yet, it was only a matter of time. Because when these guys fight, they’re always breaking bottles and brandishing clubs. However, I think the fact that people are always trying to stop them is what gives them the effrontery to keep it up. It won’t always be like that though, one day, no one would stop them and they’ll cross the point of no return. Maybe then, they’ll finally get a taste of what they’re showing everyone else.
The landlord is not being cooperative. For him, the customers were yet to do anything that would warrant him giving them the quit notice, and until then, they had the right to stay in the shop they paid for. Honestly, I don’t know.
Why am I writing it today? Because just this morning again I witnessed another fight. It was loud enough that I could hear their raised voices from inside my house. I don’t like it at all, it’s distracting and it’s upsetting because I know the kind of heat that will come if someone so much as begins to bleed as a result.
Well, it is what it is. We can’t force the landlord to kick them out, I guess we can only try to cope and survive because that’s the only option at this point. But no issues, we’d be fine.
