Back in my highschool days, I always wished that everything could just come to an end. I longed so much for the day we would finally graduate and be free from all the stress. Little did I know that a day would come when I would start missing my classmates so badly and wishing to return to all the wonderful times we spent together.
My classmates were like family to me. Despite the fact that there would often be malice, fights, and ridiculous arguments amongt us, we just couldn't deny the the strong bond we managed to build over the few years of schooling together in the same classroom.
The last time I got to see all my high school classmates together in one room was on the day of our graduation ceremony. After that we still kept in touch through our normal WhatsApp group chat but of course that didn't last long as a few of us had to change numbers, move out of the country and I guess...just leave the group for some personal reasons.
We probably just moved on with our lives, which of course was normal because of University, work and a whole other stuff.
Earlier this year, we decided to organize our first ever reunion.
It had only just been three years since we graduated but I guess it just really felt like a long time.
A School reunion is an event that provides a chance for people to catch up with old friends, get to know their former classmates as grown-ups and reminisce about memories from their school days. Without school reunions, many people who have moved out of their hometowns would never be able to see their old classmates again.
Everyone from the graduating class should be invited to a high school reunion, meaning it's a chance for classmates from all social circles to come together as adults.
It all started out with our 'used to be' class rep who brought up the idea. Of course it definitely wasn't easy for him to reach each and every one of us. But surprisingly, he succeeded and created a new WhatsApp group chat to enable us to get in touch to plan the meetup.
We were all excited about the idea and went on to choose a date, venue and also make contributions because we wanted it to be in the form of a small party. This was the really difficult part because everyone had their own schedules so it was hard to decide on a date.
Few of us didn't want to come while some were not interested in making any contributions.
Series of arguments broke out and some persons even left the group chat. It even came to a point where it seemed like the reunion was not going to happen but we somehow managed to resolve the whole thing. We came up with a date that worked for everyone and also made the necessary contributions.
We decided to have our reunion at a nice hotel after first visiting our school together.
On that day which was a Friday, I got to the school compound and the turnout was really surprising. Of course, I didn't actually think many of us would show up, following the agreement issues on the group chat. But right there, I could count about twenty of us.
Although some of us were not able to make it, I was really happy. It was just so nice seeing my old pals together once again in our old school. They all looked so changed and grown up that I even found it hard recognizing some of them. This really surprised me because it had only been three years. They all were also very excited to see me too.
We went about greeting the principal, teachers, non teaching staff and all the students we could still recognize. Of course, they all gave us a very warm welcome.
Being in the school alone, was really nostalgic and it made me so glad I was able to make it.
After we were finished in the school, we all proceeded to our planned venue which was already nicely set up and decorated by one of us.
There, we held our little reunion party. We had so much to eat and drink. And there was really good music and entertainment.
We went on reminiscing about all the good old times, looking through our year books and making fun of how weird we all appeared in them. We also shared a lot about our experiences in the university, our life struggles and our plans for the future.
The reunion was really one to remember, I really felt at home with my old classmates despite not seeing them for a really long time and of course we plan to hold a bigger one again in a few more years.
This post is my response to the @hive-learners weekly posting topics for week 32 edition 02 on the title "Reunion".
