In 1979, a carton of milk was sold for #10 with 96 tins in one carton, rice was #25 around that time and was sold for even less before then, a full chicken costs #1. 20kobo, decent jobs were not hard to come by, people were content, they tilled the soil and ate it's fruit. All they were concerned about was being able to feed well. The madness associated with quest for wealth which is now so widespread wasn't so bad. Then, people lived for long number of years and the death of a young one was seen as an abomination, you go out at odd hours with little fear for your safety....not my words but that of my dad.
How do I even correctly answer this question when I never lived in the past? If only I could summon my forefathers! Well, I asked my father who isn't my forefathers but who met his father's father who I guess could count as my forefather.
My father would always tell how life used to be 'fantabulous' before now. The food, music, culture, everything.
They worked hard to get the simplest things. They grew their food, used their herbs which was/is effective.
We on the other hand have better means of communication, efficient transport, good health care system, nice media and amenities. But then, these technologies also have adverse effects on us; pollution, health defects - we create diseases and then look for ways to treat them(please, don't ask me about this. Read between the lines), we get stressed from doing little physical activities and also we worry much. We have so many intelligence and security implementations yet we're so insecure. Crazy ideologies have been left behind as we are now more innovative and make adjustments that suit our time.
I think in their time, they had everything they needed to be happy, same way we have everything we need. Maybe, just maybe, the next generation would consider themselves more happy technologically and otherwise whilst we would claim to have better livelihood then they. People create happiness around themselves. It is what is obtainable.
Even then, I cannot adequately say who lived/lives a better life. If I had to measure both our happiness(es) using material possessions as the yardstick, then, we have it better. But maybe in terms of contentment, livelihood and socialization, they had it better.
I cannot say for certain who's happier.
They had their beautiful times and so do we!
Thank you for stopping by.
Good-day!
