Going through self denial is not an easy feat at all and you constantly have to keep reminding yourself of the reason you are denying yourself of that thing. Everyone knows to stay in shape you have to eat healthy and exercise. This is where self discipline, self restraint and self denial comes to play.
Self denial in simple terms is you avoiding and denying yourself of things or activities that could derail you from your goal. If you want something there are other things you have to give up to get it. For example, a student that aims for first class has to give up sleep and outings to make more room for studying to achieve the goal.
Discipline is really essential in putting self denial into practice.
I wanted to have a flat stomach, so at first i stopped eating late and also reduce the portion of food i eat, avoiding junk food along the way, avoiding junk food for me is really difficult, i could literally live on junk food. Anyways, I tried this for a while but I soon fell into the temptation of late night eating and junk food. I skipped a lot of exercise days and the more I skipped a day the harder it became to get back on track. I was becoming very tired often and lazy and i knew that i had to resume my daily exercise and routine because i knew what i wanted.
you have to deny yourself some things in other to achieve another
So I pushed myself and started again. It was a bit hard at first and I had to go at a small pace, reducing the time for a particular set so I could get used to it again. I try not to give myself more than a day off from my routine so I don't fall off the wagon again.
My sitting posture affected my back, i knew that but slogching was far easier than trying to sit upright until it began causing me physical pain and i had to force myself to do the thing i have always know is right and the better choice and it started getting better again, i never want to feel that pain again so every now and then if i catch myself trying to slouch i mentally scold myself and remember the pain.
The truth is this stuff is not easy and you just have to take baby steps to get what you want from anything. I used to tell myself if doing this healthy and right thing is hard today if I can just try a little today it will be better and easier the next day and soon enough I will be so used to it I won't notice the stress of it. I started holding plank (exercise) for 10 seconds and added 10 each day until i could do 1 minute effortlessly.
Once again this was an interesting topic to write on as it made me remember the days I struggled with my routine and how far I have come now.
